Brockyman wrote:I have never had any lock up problems with my unit until this weekend when it has locked up 3 times. Last night I set it to record a couple of programmes before I went out and it didn't record either because it had locked up. Now, if this were my PC locking up regularly the first thing I would do would be to do a defrag. I assume there is no way of doing that on the PVR? But thinking about it, I have had the thing 2 and a bit months and recorded and deleted quite a few programmes. The hard drive is now going to be fairly fragmented so surely something has to start suffering. Today I have bought a DVD writer to back up the programmes I want to keep and I will format the hard drive, but surely this isn't what the manufacturers expect us all to do every few weeks. Can the hard drive be removed and defragged on a PC? Has anyone tried it and if so did they notice any improvement? Any other idea's?
Cheers
Ian.
The hard disk is not in standard PC format. The lockups are not caused by the disk being fragmented, they are caused two types of scheduled events.
"automatic updates" and "update the clock in standby" are what cause the problems. If you turn off automatic updates and don't put the unit in standby then you'll find it won't hang. Mine hasn't hung for many weeks since doing this. Remember to check for software updates manually.0 -
I have 2 PVR101's and in my view they are fantastic. I bought one and then went back fo a second. They only rarely lock up, the no signal problem doesn't happen allot on mine, may be only once or twice a week and I can go over a week without any. I am outside the official freeview broadcast area, on a good quality aerial and top of the range booster and I use group filters to limit interferance. I have found that sometimes its interference on the digital signal that causes lockups/no signal ( badly surprised cars mainly). I had a little Hitachi freeview box and I had to reset that every few days after it kept locking up. These box's are great. I hope they sort out these problems soon, but I not taking mine back!!! if not.0

I have found that turning of Automatic Updates made no difference for me. Once I found that not putting the unit into standby stopped all lock-ups even with Automatic Updates left on I have left it like this for about 6 weeks now with no lock-up problems.
Incidently will the unit pick-up Automatic Updates if the unit IS not put into standby?

Apologies if this has been asked before but why did the DTG update jump from 1.1 to 1.5? for the 1010

...at a guess, the 1.4 update for Bush/Goodmans has some commonality with the PVR101 work. As we also know, there have been several 'false starts' to improve on 1.1. So, I would suggest that 1.2 and 1.3 failed to deliver and 1.4 was limited to Bush/Goodmans issues only.0

Brockyman wrote:Doesn't the unit only check for updates at certain times of day though? My PVR has locked up again twice today but until this weekend it had NEVER locked up before. I also had to reboot tonight because when playing recordings it just displayed a black screen with sound, fine after rebooting though.
Ian.
I believe it looks for updates once a day, and checks the time every 3 hours (or maybe it was 4, it's somewhere in the thread  )
Colin - I don't know for sure but I hope it would.0
