You can walk into any solicitor's and ask them to certify your passport or other documents. They probably do it on the spot, and charge you something like £15 per certified document.

    A&L are stupid.
I had two or three accounts with them and I wanted to open another.
They told me I had to send them certified copies to prove my ID.
I phoned them up to query this and they were adamant. So I asked if I could close my other accounts. They let me do this on the phone!!!
So they were quite happy to let me take money without 'trusting' my ID but would not let me add more money.

Do they give you the option of going into one of their own branches to get their own staff to certify? Bank of Scotland have done this for me.

I have applied for their issue saver2 as well, and also asked for certified documents to be sent despite me as existing customer and holds an issue 1.
The letter clearly tells you the persons who can certify and of them is postmaster or PO staff on your local post office.

Just got back from a Alliance & Leicester branch where I simply gave them my id documents and they sent them internally. Hassle-free experience. No need to go to a solicitor or PO.

Well I hope your story does have a happy ending.

There have been previous posts from people who have done just what you did ... took their documents into a local A&L branch for verification, only be to told by A&L HQ several days later that their authentication was rejected.

A&L are, IMHO, the worst administration in the financial market place. I got my money out of their clutches last year.

Should get on a treat with Abbey & Santander then. Sounds as though they're ideally
    suited
