Why Are Some Thread Titles In Bold Type?

Not stickies, but ordinary threads.
A few are in bold type, most are not. Some that were bold at one time are not at another. It all seems quite arbitrary.
I found another thread on this board which suggested that it was threads which I had not read but, if that's the case, then most of them would be as I certainly don't have time to read them all on every board!
Just curious.

I thought it was threads where no-one had read the latest post, but it sometimes seems to be slightly inconsistent, in that I go to check one of them and find I have read the last post already.
But that's my basic understanding.

It should be that any thread that has a post in it that you have not read turns bold.
Sometimes it seems to get confused and keeps a thread bold despite the fact I've already read the latest post - but that's the general idea.0 -

sra is right
if you haven't read all the last post it's boldIf my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!0 -
I would never argue with sra.
Especially as he's right, it does sometimes get confused and leave a post bold when I KNOW I've read it all! :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Not true, and has not been for as long as I can remember, the image below is from a page on MSE that as you can see some are bold, and admitted I have not read, but the others that are not bold, (with the exception of the Working Lunch thread), I have not read and they are not in bold, this is normal for the site and does not confer with how you suggest it works, although that is probably the intention as to how it should work.
Just for confirmation, I have read only the thread entitled "BBC - Working Lunch-Rubbish", I have not read any of the others, yet some are bold and some are not, suggesting that I have read those that are not bold, untrue!Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Indeed. There are hundreds of threads which I have not read not bold and many which I have read which are bold (including this one).
Most confusing.

The way that it works for me, is that any thread that has a post in it that I have not read since I was last logged in, is shown in bold. I have just proved this by viewing a board that I never visit (I Won! I Won! I Won!) and the only bold titles were those posted after I had logged out last night. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Ok this is where PHP and code gets a little confusing
BUT basically what SRA has said is correct - however if you press refresh or reload or you have been inactive for a while and load a forum from the main page (so techncially you have been signed out but because you have ticked "remember me" then you'd never notice this - you just think you're still logged in but infact you're logged back in
)then loads of the bold titles will have gone to normal font. Unless since you got logged out they have been replied to.
SOMETIMES yes it doesn't remove the bold face but it's usually coinciding with people posting as you opened the thread or you having gone from one page to the last but the section main page doesn't register this properly
Ok so it's all slightly more technical than that (can you tell I used to run roughly the same software?) but without posting a tonne of code and getting very boring that's roughly the explanation

Isn't it just threads that have had new posts since the last time you logged in, regardless of if you read the thread or not? That's what I thought anyway and seems to be what happens for me.0

The mystery is solved :j.0
