Significance of Voter's Roll

Is it humanly possible to get a credit card, mail order catalogue or full bank account without being on the Voter's Roll at all? What are your experiences with this? Is it true that having a landline home phone registered in your name has some bearing on your credit score?

Lenders are looking for stability from borrowers and in today's climate I think that anyone who is not on the electoral roll or has a landline is very unlikely to be offered credit by a mainstream lender.

Unfortunately not. Some lenders routinely reject applicants whose ID cannot be verified electronically via the electoral register.Originally Posted by justsayyes

Surely if old enough to get a credit card then you'd be old enough that it's illegal NOT to be on the electoral roll. Thus, yes, it should be hard if not impossible to get credit if not on the roll.0 -
i'm not on the voter's roll and i got a full bank account recently. But i think it does matter though with some lenders.0

Well, yes, but I have never known of anyone being prosecuted for this crime. Just out of interest, does any MSEer know of anyone at all who has been prosecuted for the crime of not registering for the electoral roll?

Part of section 3.1 of the Banking Code states:
tell you what information we need from you to prove
your identity (by law, we have to check your
identity).
Make sure you ask a for a copy of that list.0 -
Lloyds TSB gave me a current account with a £1k+ overdraft, using a passport as ID. I was not on the electoral roll at my current address. However, I had 10 years on the roll at my previous address and I'm not sure if that made a difference.0
