  • Technically speaking, it is illegal to charge him for this journey unless you have a PCV or taxi/private hire licence.... the minute you ask for money, it becomes Hire or reward, and in validates your driving licence and possibly your insurance....

I believe this 'law' has changed to allow for car sharing. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could point us in the right direction.

Nope the difference is if you profit from your carshare. If you just cover your costs or just get a contribution then it's perfectly legal.

Perhaps he is doing you a favour keeping you company? Why not just tell him he is on lunch or something similar?

Thanks for the advice, You're all right, I would normally ask it to be split but it's my younger brother I'm taking and he's really skint at the moment.

I don't mind paying the most but just didn't want to be worse off for him deciding to come with me!

Is this a journey you're doing for him or one you're doing for yourself and taking him along for a ride out? I just ask because if it's the latter, I think you've a bloody cheek and I think if that's the case, he should charge you national minimum wage as a drivers assistant.
