How much extra petrol per passenger?

I just wondered people's thoughts on how much extra petrol was used because of an extra passenger in the car?

Specifically I'm going on a return 400 mile journey (120 quid-ish I think) and want to charge my passenger the extra it is costing me to have him in the car, rather than a fair cut of the petrol costs, if you see what I mean.

Thanks for any advice

Depends whether the passenger is 50kg or 150kg. But probably no more than £5-£10.

I would charge him for fuel and a contribution to the car (wear and tear, tyres, servicing etc).

A 400 mile trip shouldn't really cost £120 in fuel, that is approx 14.4 mpg (assuming petrol costs 105p per litre).

Or am I being silly and it's 400 miles there and 400 back a total of 800 miles?

Sorry, it's me getting my English wrong! 800 miles altogether.

I assume you were going anyway so half the petrol cost seems fair to me.

A couple of quid. rolling friction is very small compared to aerodynamic drag.

agree with landy, half the fuel costs if the journey is for both of you.

Have to also agree. 2 of you in car = 1/2 cost each.

I agree, unless I was going to drive there alone anyway. In which case, I'd not ask for petrol money (but just hope it'd be offered).

Thanks for the advice, You're all right, I would normally ask it to be split but it's my younger brother I'm taking and he's really skint at the moment.

I don't mind paying the most but just didn't want to be worse off for him deciding to come with me!
  • if its your younger brother just take a fiver off him and buy a drink for him on route

I think if you drove 2mph slower than usual you would recoup your cost
