Recipe for curry - suitable for 9 month old

Hi all
My daughter is 9 months old and LOVES strong flavours. She mainly eats home cooked food but one day I gave her a jar of vegetable curry and she loved it.
Now, as I dont like curry, I have NO CLUE how to make it!! Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to cook a curry suitable for her? It must be suitable for freezing as I cook in bulk for her. Meat or veg curry is ok.
Thanks!

I'm sure Curry Queen will be along in a minute, or someone else with a link to a whole thread of curries, but here is my very basic advice.
All basic curries are made the same way - you fry an onion (and maybe some garlic) and some curry spices, then add protein and liquid.
So a very basic chicken curry:
Fry an onion, add curry powder (not too much for a child. A teaspoon should be enough for about 4-6 chicken legs), or a spoonful of a Patak's curry mix (comes in glass jars, and no I don't mean the cooking sauces) and fry until the onion is transparent and the spices are cooked. (If you want to be authentic you can use turmeric, chilli powder, mustard seeds....the main thing is that the spices, whatever they are, are fried.)
Fry off the chicken to brown the skin a bit.
Chuck in a tin of tomatoes, leave to simmer and eat an hour later.
You can use any sort of spices, add veggies to the mix (I think chicken is delicious with carrots, and a good way to get veggies into children!), vary the amount of wetness, chuck in some coconut and cream*....but this is your basic curry recipe!
Hope she enjoys it! :xmastree:
*Cream probably isn't so good for freezing. Everything else here will freeze nicely.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
Ho yuss! Curries work very well in the slow cooker.
Oh, and as for your original question...
..could you have a look at a jar of shop made stuff to find out which spices that they thought were suitable for children? Presumably the aim is to get the curry taste but without the heat.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Whatever you do don't add salt and check sodium levels so the meal is safe for a 9 month old."This site is addictive!"

I looked on the jar - it said 'curry spices'!! Thats not too helpful is it?! Being a none curry eating I have no clue what 'curry spices' are
Thanks for the advice re salt - I always check the sodium levels so that she only has minimal amounts.
What do I do in a slow cooker then?? Shove it all in and hope for the best?!? Thats my usual way of cooking :snow_grin2012 wins approx £11,000 including 5k to spend on a holiday :j0 -
More or less.
There's a recipe from our Slow Cooker recipe collection in the link that you could adapt to suit your needs:-
Chicken thigh curry
But I have absolutely no idea which spices are suitable for young children. Sorry. There might be some help on the page below somewhere (and if not you could join the forums):-

When mine were little I had two cookery books for babies/toddlers by Annabel Karmel. One was called something menu or meal planner (as in can't remember what and then either menu or meal but it was definatley planner) Can't remember the title of the other one. If I still had them I'd willingly give them to you as they were brilliant. There was definately a curry in one of them if not both and the other receipes were delicious. Sorry thats not alot of help I know but I hope at least it's a good lead - perhaps someone else on here has the books and could flick through them for you.0

And upon engaging brain and quickly searching ebay they were:-
Annabel Karmel's Baby and Toddler Cookbook
and
The Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner by Annabel Karmel
perhaps you could be cheeky on ebay and asked the sellers if there's a curry recipe in there! I know babies love strong flavours and it's a wonderful opportunity to introduce them to new things before they reach the fussy stage so good luck!0
