Hi
I am just worried regarding my mum. My mum's(who works FT) husband has just passed over and we are worried over if any benefits are due as he was not insured.
The background is He was in reicept of Lower rate DLA( partly blind) and IB
with no assets my mum works F/T but the death was sudden (he was only 39) so no provisions were made.
My mum is now worried over the funeral costs and houshold bills (as we presume his benefits will stop)
Does any one know what help is available to her
Thanks in advance

Hi
I'm sure someone will be along soon who can help. Meanwhile is there any more info you can give, mums age, whether she has children at home and if they were by her late husband.
I did a quick google search but don't know if the info is up to date. But this info might be helpful and I'll try to have another look.0 -
Try www.dss.gov.uk.0

If she was aged over 45 at the time of death then she will be able to claim bereavment benefit.
Its calculated using 2 figures, the first is age related by the survivors age. The full figure of 82.05 is reduced by 7% for each year below the age of 55., the resulting figure i sthen proportioned depending on the 'working life' of the person who died.
If she is aged under 45 she will not be eligible for any bereavement benefit, but may get widowed parents allowance if she has children under 16 (IIRC).
She may be eligible for a funeral payment or a bereavement payment.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

It's worth noting that even if your mum doesn't qualify for Bereavement Allowance or Widowed Parent's Allowance, that she may still be entitled to a Bereavement Payment of £2000. Your mum needs to complete a BB1 - Bereavement Benefit Claim pack. The Bereavement Payment should not be confused with a Funeral payment (this could also be claimed, not sure what the form number is for that). You can contact the local Jobcentre Plus office and they will give you the relevant information and send the necc claim forms in the post.
Claims to Bereavement Benefit are normally processed quickly.

Unfortunately, as your mum is working full time, she will not be entitled to the funeral payment.
The bereavement payments and pensions depend on more info than you gave. But apply anyway, nothing is paid unless they know about it!10
