coal fire

hello first thing i have a borken finger so i hope you can read this ok.
we have a coal fire and it is our main heating for the house. i am a privet let house. the coal i use is 3 bags a week and they cost normaly £11 a bag. the coal man told us a month ago that the price is going up to almost £15 a bag. so today just got a delivery and he has said it is going up in price again. i cant afford any more. last winter we had to go without heating for at least 1 time a week and i have 2 children one age 5 and a 2 year old. i just dont know what we are going to do as i cant switch coal company as there are none that deliver here. is there any help out there or is it going to be another cold winter for us again?
i used to hate it when aunts and grans would come up to me at weddings pinch my cheeks and say "your next, your next". well they stoped that crap when i started to do the same to them at funerals:rotfl:

When I still had the open fire I used to eek the coal out with logs and the blocks that support pallets. The pallets themselves were useful for kindling but the shrapnel they produce made them a little dodgy for every day burning.

I presume a bag delivered is a hundreadweight (50k ish) Most agricultural merchants or even coal merhcants sell pre packed bags at about £4 or less a bag for 25kg of housecoal. So if you can why not find a supplier and buy up 10 -20 bags a time. You should save?????? That is of course if you have a car to get it.

  • If you could get a few hundred pounds you can buy a gas fire with a catalic converter in it, it has a little gas bottle inside prob cost about £16 to fill, and prob last about month if used few hours a night.

Try throwing an old quilt on the sofa will keep you warm and if it gets a little chilly can chuck it over your legs to keep you warm, nice to snuggle up and watch tv in the evening.

Try thick curtains and shut them just before it gets dark to keep heat in.

Chuck an extra blanket on kids beds, have a look in charity shops and ebay for some wooly jumpers nice over sized ones lovely and comfy.

Explore getting an electric oil filled radiator. They are more econmical than most and could provide that extra boost when the coal runs low?
