    Quick tax question:

I'm going to do a mystery shop at the end of the month. There is a £10 reimbursement as well as a fee. The item I want to buy is more than £10.

For tax purposes, do I put the amount of the item I buy, or do I put the £10 reimbursement?

I think this is subjective really. If it were me, then what I do is.....

If it says we reimburse up to £5 on groceries (no min spend) and I spend £10 then I claim £5 as expenses.
If it says spend at least £5 on groceries and I spend £10 on groceries then I just count the first few things on the receipt until I exceed £5, and claim that as expenses.

However if you can spend anything but are reimbursed up to £10 and buy a new plasma TV then I probably wouldn't claim £X-thousand for it!

Broadly speaking I agree, esp with Gap who often give you a minimum for example of £5. So if I end up spending £7.50 then that's what I'll claim as don't see why I should be out of pocket for the stuff I buy, plus it helps offset your tax. But as you say I wouldn't go too mad!

You practically HAVE to claim more with Gap. I've lost count of the number of times I've ended up out of pocket on their jobs because they specify you MUST buy this, this, and this... which ends up costing, say £12, but then they will only pay £10.

I guess the Aussies have a great sense of humour!:rotfl:

When they tell you that you must buy a certain item(s), but then only refund part of the cost. You can claim the rest as a business loss. Basically you can't do the job without buying the specific item(s).

When they say spend at least XXX then you may find the taxman will only let you claim back the amount that was to be reimbursed. It's a question of could you still have done the job and not spent XXX over what would be reimbursed
