turf suppliers?

About to turf over a revamped garden in a couple of weeks, but first the turf is required(considered seeding but done it before and haven't the time personally this year so turf i sth eonly option).

Researched and found a fair few online companies, also researched who are members of the TGA which sort of dictates the standard of urf I'm likely to get.

But has anyone actually used one? Was the turf that was delivered suitable and as described? Did it take OK. Purely on a price issue I'd be best off buying some from quite a distance away in the North West, on the flip side we have a company reasonably locally that is a bitmore expensive (say 15%) but we then know the turf has grown on similar soil and in a similar climate to where it will be laid.

So anyone any good/bad stories on suppliers or recommendations/ones to avoid.

TIA

All my turf over the years I have got from my local garden centre. If there were any problems when you unroll it it is easy to take back.

Having said that my neighbour ordered his online last autumn, dont know where from, it arrived on time, and his lawn looks fab.
But he had spent days before diging it over, weeding it,and added manure!! As it rained daily after he had laid it, it didnt dry out so no curley edges.

Good luck with your new lawn whatever you decide to do.

I cant fault rolawn, we had topsoil from them in an old house, were easy and polite to deal with, and nice delivery people. they do turf too.

i got some turf from b&q for pet runs a few weeks ago. it's doing fine, no patches (yet, touchwood), not the best type of grass, but good for basic.

the Northwest one is www.onlineturf.co.uk Based near Ormskirk, I've now realised taking out the delivery costs these are by far the cheapest than I can obtain down here, nearly half the price of my local ones annoyingly

Has anyone bought turf from B&Q or Focus? These shops are very near to me so I wouldn't need to pay delivery charges. If you have, what was the quality like? And did it bed in well?
I need good quality, and low prices!:D

Well TBH B&Q stuff does not look great and normally there for a few days. It depends how much you need. Pick up the Yellow Pages and phone some turf people up alot offer free delivery or only £5 etc. And they are normally alot cheaper than the sheds as thats all they sell.

Yeh as said the B&Q stuff aint gonna be top quality as it's been sat around a few days. Place I used to work at sold turf, every single roll was to order but cos so many of the local landscaping firms used us in the height of the season we had huge amounts coming in, think the most I've seen was about 20 pallets one morning! It came from Stewarts Turf, was cut one morning, sent up on an artic overnight then we'd have it in the morning ready for the customer to collect, so it was all very fresh.

Just a note, fresh turf is pretty heavy so about the most you wanna carry in an average car is about 12 rolls spaced out (seats folded down) to spread the weight

Just been into my local B+Q for some bits, couple in front at the checkout had two trolleys loaded with turf, she told the SA they were 20p and he had to go and check, came back in an said she was absolutely right!

I went outside and low and behold, 6 huge pallets of them. they seemed to be the standard size roll.

Admittedly some were looking a little yellow but not dead by any means, once opened out and a bit of tlc they would be fine

So if anyones local to crawley west sussex, grab yourself a bargain!

Great stuff, the lurch. Maybe we should tell the management at Wembley about it

  • Hi greenfingered mse-ers

I've made the executive decision - we're not going to seed the lawn, we'll be having it turfed! But the problem is, where do I buy it from? I want cheap as possible but reasonably good quality. Can anyone tell me where to go (I'm in west yorkshire if anyone knows of a local company here) and what sort of price per roll I should expect to pay?

    Many thanks
