Freeview - can`t get all channels

Hi,

bought a digilogic freeview box last night, plugged it it, did automatic search, checked for software upgrades too - all fine.

Apart from i have channels missing i.e. E4, more 4 all the itv ones, channel 5, uk history etc.

i`ve rescanned but still can`t get them - is there any reason why i should get some channels and not others, i have checked with freeview provider and i have coverage in my area (liverpool city centre), is it something to do with the box?

cheers

Digital TV is transmitted differently to analogue. Groups of channels are combined as a multiplex and the multiplex is transmitted over a single frequency. If I remember there are 6 multiplexes for freeview. If you have a communal aerial that could be at fault, do any of your neighbours have freeview? If you have your own aerial then it might need upgrading lke jake says.

The multiplexes and their channels can be found here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/terrestrial/mux/

Its always the E4 C4 ITV multiplex. It has weaker error codes and fails first if your reception is a little weak. I have sat down to watch lost on E4 several times inly for the rain to mess it up!

ps a multiplex is carrier of multiple pictures (like the multiplex cinema with lots of screens)

You are missing multiplex 2 according to the digital TV group here.
The missing multiplex could be broadcast on a channel that your aerial grouping is not designed to receive. If your analogue reception is good then it is possible to compare the analoge transmitter channels in relation to the digital transmitter multiplex channels from the same transmitter that the aerial points at.
You could also have a video recoeder/set top box that chooses to send an output over the aerial cable that coincides with the missing digital multiplex.
You can often move these channels or disable them and use scart connections.

Do you know the name of the transmitter that your aerial points at ?
you can try at Wolfbane to see what digital transmitters are local and what aerial groups they use. http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?
You can compare the analogue channels/transmitters here:- http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tva.exe?

In this instance, multiplex just means many TV channels broadcast on a single frequency.

Check your manual - the set-top box may display the signal strength for each channel.

You need to know your TV transmitter.

See the 'UK digital TV reception predictor' page.

Your aerial may need changed ....... or a booster may work.

We had this problem, one day some of the channels just wouldnt work. I put it down the the aerial being moved in the wind, so we brought an aerial booster in argos for around £10 and its been fine since.

    hey guys

thanks for info so far all very helpfull.

another question how come i can recieve some channels in one miltiplex but not others i.e. MU C i can get E4+1 but not uk history or sky 3.

once i have checked what traceiver im recievig from how does this help - how do i use the information.

how does having a shared arial affect the multiplex 2.

my plan when i get home is to buy a signal booster (are the ones from argos ok?) and try that, if that doesn`t work i will try a friends digi box. - is this a good plan? there is no way my landlord will get new arial - plus he lives in spain for half the year.

you can get an internal digital ariel although they are rather large or you can stick it on the wall outside your flat or the balcony if you have one. i get some channels on mine in the bedroom but it is very fussy. i need an internal arial to stick in my roof space to get all the channels and no picture blocking.

fleabay have some ariels for about £20 that should do the trick although you would also need the cabling. the complete kit is buy now for £50 or it was a couple months ago when i looked into it.
