    Hi kunekune

There are people who are fantastic spellers, but don't seek to use grammar and punctuation on an internet forum because it's not required and it's easy not to. (As a spelling and grammar pedant it's not my personal preference, but that's not the point!)

Perhaps the OP is stressed, upset, and not worrying about little things like that in a place where s/he doesn't need to! :) I'm sure his/her own tutors will pick up on anything from an academic point of view, whilst what they're seeking to ascertain on this forum is housing advice...! :D

OP - I really hope this gets sorted; it sounds like a nasty situation to be in. Let us know how it works out, won't you? :)

 My spelling is sh1te as is my grammar and technically I'm dyslexic... oh I'm a uni. lecturer at one of the top 3 universities (supposedly) in the world, with 4/5 degrees (debatable as to the value of an MA really) - equations don't have punctuation.....:D hmm feeding fruit flies the mainstay of a bio PHD, no grammar needed :D neither do graphs :D Plus it's a question of effort vs. reward - posting on an internet forum and checking your spelling? Possibly the OP is bright enough to work out where their effort is best spent... Did we understand them... yes. Job done. Ps. you're welcome to mark my chinese students' work brilliant maths, bizarre english....can build your average nuclear warhead, just not great at explaining how...

Good luck on sorting this out.

Re the solicitor, if your parents had home insurance a lot of policies also have free legal advice - you don't have to be living with them to benefit from that although they would have to make the initial calls.

I know someone that runs an antisocial project if you need any extra help I can give you their details. Just pm.

    All the best.

    Hi BB

I wasn't sure if the  was at most post or not(!), but in case it was, I really wasn't criticising the OP...I was trying to point out that spelling really isn't the top of their priority list right now, and nor does it infer how they use spelling and grammar at uni! :)

 at building a warhead but not being able to explain how...!

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

And to finish it off he's trying to fix the broken radator again with a binbag and some gaffa tape.

Are you certain he doesn't work for British Gas? This sounds on par with their quality of work.

I hope it all works out for you, but if all else fails, you could always grease the stairs steps. ;)

    Good luck.

I was not being pedantic, and I don't think OP took it that way. I wouldn't normally make any comment about spelling at all, and I don't think it was particularly rude to suggest using a spellchecker for their dissertation - not, note, for posts on this board! And we don't know what subject OP is studying, it may not be fruit flies or maths at all!

  • wow what a horrid situation! Surely if he refuses to pay the bills, the landlord should intervene?

Can't really give any useful advise, except possibly fill out the benefits fraud online form for him:
    https://secure.dwp.gov.uk/benefitfraud/

It's completely anonymous and even if he just getting investigated might make him clear off. Please keep us all updated with the situation!
  • Hi thanks for everyone's help weve been down the CAB and they offered us some advice and that he is in breach of his contract and what we can do about it. So now we are drawing up a letter about the problems with a letter from the neighbours about the noise, and then getting the uni housing people to lookover it and give a copy to the landlord and the estate agent.
Then all we can do is wait and if they do nothing were going to consult a soclisitor, and the local council about the estate agents breach of contract.

    Thanks again

I was under the impression, that when using correct English grammar, you shouldn't start a sentence with 'and'. ;)

And it is a definite faux pas to end a sentence with 'and'. :p
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only

    And elect another?
  • One should use "very" very very seldom, and never use a preposition to end a sentence with.
