International CallChecker misleading......

I have found now and in the past when using International CallChecker its misleading because it says ,say the call will cost 1p per minute, then one dials and its then says the call will cost 4p.
For example,I used the International CallChecker it came up with PhoneCheap which was supposed to be 1p,when the call went through it said it was 4p?????
I know I don't have to continue...but,I just find it very,very misleading!

The tariff depends on the particular 0844 access number used, not just the choice of provider. So you could still reach a cheaper destination on a more expensive number, but check you are using the cheap one specified.

Sometimes they change rates and ask you to ring a different number. And unfortunately sometimes they don't update their websites promptly, which is the source info of the Callchecker

Please tell us the country you were dialling and the number you dailled.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I was dialing South Africa and the number I dialed was 08448613838.

To call via PhoneCheap's 1p per minute 0844 861 3838 gateway number, you'd have been charged BT's 7p call set-up fee plus 1p per minute. The 1p per minute rate is directly associated with the number (it's 'g8' rate) and, from a BT landline, cannot change (if PhoneCheap want to charge more, they'd have to change the gateway number - to a 'g11' rate number).

  • So,would you not agree with me then, that International CallChecker is misleading....yes,PhoneCheap advertises 1p..but,its not actually, bla bla bla and this and that, ifs and but's.
Sorry, but for me,if I want to find the best price, thats what I wish to do.
Its worked for me in the past, but in this case,I find it misleading

But any chargeable call you make from your BT landline will attract BT's 7p call set-up fee plus the per-minute charge (in that case, 1p per minute).

    I don't see the problem.

  • Lets forget about BT.
If one uses International CallChecker, the cheapest company that comes up is PhoneCheap which advertise @ 1p pm.
Here's the problem...after one dials PhoneCheap they then tell you the call will cost you 4p pm????
Can you not see my point  ?

No, you cannot 'forget about BT' - that is the call provider you are using to make your call via PhoneCheaps's gateway number and, hence, the company which will charge you for the call.

If you call the 0844 861 3838 number you posted from a BT landline, the call will cost you 1p per minute (see the link to the BT Specialised Number Price List I posted for you).

P.S. You must be misdialling, I've just tried it from my BT landline - and the announcement starts, "Call charges are one P per minute. Welcome to PhoneCheap...."

  • Actually,I pay rental to Talk talk(maybe its to BT in the long run,but I really don't want to go further away from the point)
Are we on a different planet, where does your 6p come from, the figures I'm mentioning here are 1p and 4p

    Where have I mentioned 6p?

Anyway, you've just moved the goalposts. The MSE Callcheckers quote prices from a BT landline (which is why the note below is posted thereon):
Always double-check prices on providers websites before calling. Prices may vary from non-BT landlines.
Now that you've admitted you don't have a BT landline - but a Talk Talk one - we all know why you're paying extra (Talk Talk charges extra for 0844 calls).
