  • I love roast chicken but am on an incredibly tight budget, however I would rather go without than have battery-reared, so I only have it every so often instead! As Blondieleopard says "None of us will starve for want of a cheap tortured deformed chicken....."

Has anyone ever seen Free range food on special offer in supermarkets? Why don't they do it?

  • Love your chickens Revnev. Unfortunately,we can't have any where we live and the waiting list for an allotment is endless;more power to your arm though i say.
We get RSPCA Freedom Food chicken from Sainsburys, but i've also seen a good range of it in Somerfield.
Actually, got some in Sainsburys today. £1.89 for a pack containing 3 chubby thighs and 3 drumsticks. Bog standard chicken was £1.49 for the same amount. I boned them, stuffed them with black pudding and then wrapped them in bacon, roasted in oven for 30 mins - Damn tasty with tatties and veggies.
They had reasonable sized whole chickens in the same range for £3.89 which i know is not exactly £1.99 but Sainsburys ordinary bog standard bird was £2.99 for around the same weight so actually 90p difference on a whole bird but still great value for money if you use every bit of it, AND it's far tastier than the bog standard stuff which we find tasteless.
I accept it's not an option for everyone but like sluggy said, perhaps it's better to have ethical chicken once a week as opposed to tortured 'frankenstein' chicken every night.

ooh sounds like a nice dish - let's hope the pig was as well treated as the chicken LOL, I might try that recipe at the weekend.

No never  the best I've seen is some late date stuff withabout 50/70p off original price. Hardly a great saving...
( BTW Has anyone ever noticed that when Morrisons do "whoopsies" their prices are still really expensive? They only ever take about 40p off - even when the bread etc. is really bashed about - tightwads!)

ROOSTER: thanks, I will check out your suggestions.

On a recent Jamie Oliver ad he said" the great thing is that all the chicken at Sainsburys is now RSPCA approved". However, there is nothing on the packaging to say so. So I asked at customer service. She said "if its not on the packaging then its not RSPCA approved" !!
I was stunned at how disinterested she was about the 2 conflicting messages.
    Stop looking for answers....
The most you can hope for are clues.....:)
