Its not really the individual prices that make it the good deal - its the whole idea of being able to provide a family meal for £4 - tescos may have a chicken for £1.99, 1kg of carrots for 45p, and peas for £1 - but can you get the roast potatoes and yorkshires in tescos for 56p to make it a complete dinner for a family for £4?

Pop over to the Oldstyle board and we'd be picking that chicken clean for curry/soup/stew/takeaway style kebab, turn the leftover veg into bubble and squeak (though we would also roast our own potatoes) and make 100 yorkshire puds for about 30p (or make pancakes for pudding with the leftover batter)

And then we'd make stock from the carcass and vegetable trimmings.

I would guess that you could make 3 meals for 4, well managed!:D

    I would!:D

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!
  • Can i just ask people to stop and think before they buy deals like this which contain cheap chicken; where does that chicken come from and how has it been reared?
I'm not saying you have to buy free range or organic but the RSPCA freedom food chicken is only slightly more expensive than the budget chicken and so much better for you.
Not only will budget chicken have been reared in horrific conditions but it is also pumped full of water and all sorts of other rubbish to bulk it out and make it weigh more, so even if you don't care about chicken welfare, think about what you are putting into your body. Proper chicken should taste of chicken!
As Dronid said, it is easy to get 3 or 4 meals from a chicken and if you do that, you can easily afford the 50 or 60p more that you pay for a freedon food bird than a budget one.
Don't mean to preach and i know that times are tough for some people, but just something to think about.
  • I've been getting 2 Roast chickens for £5 from Morrisons the last couple of weekends, saves on my electric oven costs roasting them for a couple of hours too.

What I like about this 'deal'(apart from the cost) is that it's what I call 'proper' food as opposed to fast food, much healthier than a take-away which would cost £4 for one person at least.

  • Hi,

Please excuse my tentative mail I am new to the forum. I am a newly retired lady and this deal would feed myself and my other half for quite a few meals. The roast dinner on Sunday; Chicken Sandwiches with left over breast meat; Chicken Salad with Wings and legs; Chicken broth (with carcase); Also the potatoes and vegetables would help with more meals. (Oh by the way my local market chicken stall often sells chicken carcases for 15p each-there is enough meat on them for a soup/broth,stew meal)

Really great deal on its own though!!!

Couldn't agree more Doc - of course everyone is free to make a choice - and there may be a few people who genuinely cannot afford to pay a little bit more - but MoneySaving should always be allied to your priorities and values in life - Saving Money is not the only value that is important in the world...

just for those who haven't seen what the Doc is talking about - I keep rescued battery hens in my garden - here is Mma Makutse when I took her ourt of the sheds a few months ago..

here she is a few months later in my garden after a bit of TLC..

enjoy your bargains - but as the Doc says - consider the consequences of your choices...

fantastic work...how many chickens have you got...?
In these crunch times the animals are suffering...people are dumping them cos they cannot afford vet bills...the animal charities are not getting money...
    I take in rescue cats.....

none of us will starve for want of a cheap tortured deformed chicken.....

go veg and help the world feed itself...

PLEASE tell me where you get the Freedom Foods chickens from for only 50/60p more! I try to buy meat with a "kind" background but usually have to go without as it is so much more expensive e.g. a free range chicken between £5-£8!!
    Stop looking for answers....
The most you can hope for are clues.....:)
  • hi,
you can buy these chickens with a "kinder" background from tesco, ive not seen them in asda though our asda is only a small one.
you need to read the label carefully and its not spelt out in black and white that they are free range, i buy the chickens that say that they are bread in daylight, i cant remember if they are still in barns or outside. the supermarkets i think have contracts with the battery chicken people to sell their chickens and try to like hide the fact that they sell free range or chucks from a nicer background.
thats my own opiniom though so dont take it as gospel :)
in our tesco the packaging is brown i think and on the bottom shelf of the fridge.
    hope ive helped
    rooster xx
