In case anyone is interested, I made the spruced up cake at the weekend (I know, a little late) in an ordinary springform tin, a fairly wide one because my smaller one wasn't 2.5l.

Turned out nice enough. I'd say I could have got away with less time in the oven, but it's decent - good and firm, and came out of the tin very easily. I think the flavour leaves something to be desired, but then my vanilla essence was about 5 years out of date

Now that I know it works, I may play with my lemon essence

Still trying recipes out! We made these over Christmas:

Chestnut soup (revolting colour, reasonably tasty, O/H wasn't mad keen on the sherry)
Prodigious pavlova - not as sickly as you'd think, and was a big hit with visiting family - the fruit was lovely. Meringue was a bit flat though... the blender wasn't up to the job :(
Boozy trifle - very nice, if you like sherry... if you don't you can just avoid the sponge :D
Boston beans - we haven't cooked beans from scratch before but we thought they were nice, although the mustard gave them a bit of an odd pong

Now... has anyone else tried the wasabi crab cakes? Mine were a total flop! They disintegrated in the pan :( What on earth is supposed to be binding them? (Glad I only made a 1/5th batch to test!!)
