Ebuyer has lost the plot!

I returned under their RMA terms and conditions an external LAcie hard drive that was faulty. I received this message from Ebuyer:Mon 7th November 2005 08:18:am Ebuyer (UK)
(Invoice:2465479 Product:62845) makes noise and corrupts data

This item was tested and found to be faulty. A replacement item will be sent to you when this RMA is closed - please check your orders for more details.
I sent email:
22/11/2005 00:07 I still have not received replacement for this item. LAcie drive.

PLease let me know status.
One thing lead to another, and latest email is this:This item has been returned to the manufacturer for repair / replacement. I have requested an update on this for you but this process can take around 28 days.
This is after 3 weeks in their store.

CAn anyone help on this or on how to approach it.
cheers

Under the Sale of Goods Act you don't have to accept a repair. Get back in touch and demand a refund.
When I returned a set of faulty speakers to Ebuyer I had similar problems with them, until I told them I was going to lodge a complaint with Trading Standards.
I got my refund sorted out quite quickly after that. Their just trying it on.

Correct - use the sales of goods act - say the goods were not of "merchantable quality" and demand a refund.

They have a legal obligation to refund you.

It hasn't been said how long he had the drive for since new. The difficulty increases with time.

My honest opinion about Lacie is to avoid their products. I have bought a couple of their hard disks and both failed within a few months of purchase - causing me significant loss of data. I continually got emails telling me that a repair could take 2-4 weeks ... this was after 6 weeks of waiting. I tried contacting Lacie directly but they were not interested and only told me to go through the distributor.

After the weeks are up demand a full refund including ALL costs involved in postage and packaging (i.e. original delivery and cost of return) - assuming drive is not that old. Then go out and but something a bit more reliable - my Freecom drives (of which I have 4) have never given me a day of trouble (touch wood), nor has my Maxtor.

Sorry Lacie, but my data is too important to trust to one of your drives ever again.

  • Believe it or not, the hard drives that LAcie use are Western Digital HD.

I don't like WD hard drives. Had 3 of them go on me and had to send them back to germany for replacement. Was getting to the point where I would be spending more on postage than the hard drive cost in the first place so I bought a seagate and have had no troubles since.
  • Just a point you can't repair a hard drive it's not cost effective so don't fall for the "it will take a N weeks to repair". I too buy Seagate.

I sent back an Ipod a week ago and despite getting an email to confirm receipt it is only this morning showing updated as 'received' and now there is a message saying there are general delays.

I tried phoning at 10.46 am this morning and their rather helpful (not) phone system informs me they are only open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, so they are obviously in a time warp or else I've just sent my children off to school on a weekend!

  • well, still nothing from Ebuyer.
I have now threatened them with the small courts here in Northern Ireland. Hopefully that will sort it.

    cheers for all the comments.
