Hi all, been looking at the cheapest providers on here and the adsl site, but when i add together price of modem/connection,as im coming from dial-up,it bumps the price up a fair bit, about £80 on top of the monthly payments.
The only 2 that offer free connection/modem is Pipex and Wanadoo, with 2mb speed at £14.99.Wandoo 14.99 for the first 6 months, then 17.99.Bit stuck as what to do,any pointers from the people in the know?to many on offer to decide which is best, with the buy the modem/connection?
If im better off going this way, then please tell me! dont mind 12 month tie in,if it will be reliable.Dont really wont to go above £15,for what i need. thanks in advance.

From the ISPs that I've used - I recommend Madasafish, whom I'm currently on. They have a very stable and reliable connection. They have a generous usage allowance of 5GB. Their deal is slightly different from when I signed up as it's now speeds up to 8Mb and £11.99 for the first 6 months and £17.99 a month thereafter.0

If you don't want to use peer to peer (p2p) services then have look at Plusnet. They have a Broadband Plus account which is £14.99 a month for a 2Mb connection with no access limits and they defer payment of the connection and modem instead of paying up front (ie. you pay when you leave Plusnet based on how long you have been with them). You also get 100Mb of webspace for your own website and unlimited email accounts.
I know Plusnet are getting a lot of flak at the moment but this is largely because they introduced an Acceptable Use Policy in September. This basically says if you sign up to the Plus package and do excessive p2p and usenet downloads, you are likely to have your access speed throttled or even blocked. This has upset a lot of Plusnet customers who made heavy use of the cheap, nolimits account.
If you do normal surfing, email and VOIP, you will have no such problems. I have been with Plusnet for years and the broadband connection is very reliable and fast.

I second plusnet. Just installed them at new home last month, excellent service etc. Much better then NTL!!! My brother has also used them for two years plus and finds them great.

I am just in the process of changing to Pipex. Their current Christmas Deal is £14.99 for 2 meg BB, with 500 mins free telephone calls, and two months free BB (three months free if you are changing from another supplier and already have a modem). I am told they are a good, stable, provider - though I don't have personal experience yet.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

Will look into those mentioned, and see what i think is the best.Anymore options, please post. Thanks all. olly0

Well after searching about i think it will be either Plusnet, with the free connection/modem,and every year you stay the price of equipment reduces,if you decide to leave.2mb for £14.99.
Or Wanadoo who im with on dial up,there broadband is free connection/modem for 14.99 6 months, then 17.99 other 6 months with 8mb which i can get.Not to sure on what i pay if i leave after first year tho? I think if you leave within the first 12 months you pay the full years monthly payments from what i read.0 -

Going to check them out thanks. Same price over the year as my current provider Virgin, but with a bigger cap and more extras such as unlimited email, free .co.uk etc. Do you use their newsgroup server? If so what's it like?0 -
I do use their newsgroup server. It's Giganews - it's been good to me - but I just use it for my moderated legal newsgroup :rolleyes:0

One thing to bear in mind is there is no such thing as a free lunch. Most ISP's which offer 'free modem/connection' expect you to sign up for 12 months. Leaving sooner will incur a charge of the cost of connection and sometimes the cost of the modem.

True, but how often do you change your ISP?
Also the ones that are monthly usually make you pay upfront for the connection costs and the modem. If you want broadband for less than 12 months, you'll either pay for all those costs up front or when you quit.
Why not get all the freebies and choose a company that you know you can stick with for 12 months?0
