New bed for little on

We've got to the point when little toad needs to go in a proper bed. However we are in two minds about the whole thing. Do we go for a junior bed with a spring mattress or do we go for a proper, but low, single bed?

She is a little dink, and will never be a huge girl.

Thoughts appreciated.

My advice is go for a proper single bed. When our son was small we had a cot that converted to a small bed. We found a problem when he woke with a nightmare (or something) and couldnt get back to sleep we ended up sitting on the floor til he fell asleep again.... we switched to a single bed so we could get in with him so it didn't matter how long we were there then as we could sleep.... as a parent you know how precious sleep is!

We used a bed guard to stop him falling out at first but now we just have 2 big cushions on the floor to soften his fall....

    good luck

My two went straight into a single bed from the cot, and Charlotte will when she is old enough.

Best advice is to buy a cheap matress for the first couple of years, then replace it with a better one once they have grown out of the "jumping on the bed" stage :D

I bought a low single bed for mine, but eldest had one of those little junior beds until he was 5 iirc. eldest is tiny though, youngest is enormous nand would have needed a single bed after a year or so anyway.

    Quite agree
  • B&M have a pink, metal framed single bed for £30.
You can pick up a cheap mattress for £30 which will inevitably be replaced in a year or two.

I'm in the 'buy a single bed' school of thought, if you buy a junior bed then you're going to have to buy a single bed at a later date. Not very MSE ;)

I agree with the others - buy a single bed, it's less hassle in the long run. My ds1 has had 3 beds already as he went from a cot to a junior bed then bunk beds and finally a high sleeper and I'm now having to buy him a single bed as quite frankly I'm fed up of having to do high rise bed changes.

Learn from my mistakes buy a good (low) bed and replace the mattress over the years!

Oh I'm looking at this bed as I think it'll be good for guests and sleepovers.

However I now need 2 mattresses - anyone know of any sales on?

  • Only advantage to the junior beds is you can see them as a couple of years' stop gap if you haven't made decisions about how you want to furnish the child's room for the long term. I think I got one for about £99 including mattress while I went through the loop others have described about cabin beds, single beds etc.

Was just about to point out this bed:

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S39823978

Its bigger than a cot, and slightly smaller than a single bed. My DD has had one of these for 3 years because it was a brilliant fit in her tiny room. Im 5ft 7 and my feet just stick out of the end. The mattress was only about £20 as well.
  • Hi I agree too, I put my little boy whos now 2 1/2 straight in to a standard low single bed, but we bought a cheap one from ikea with just a cheap foam matterasse, i think the whole lot cost £99.

I've been told in two seperate good quality bed shops that small children dont need expensive matterasses as they weigh less and dont need the same support untill there 8-10 years plus.

  • Hiya

My two have Ikea extendable beds which have been really good. Cheap, you can replace the cheap foam mattress with a more expensive sprung one later on when they're bigger, and you have the benefit of being able to change the length to one of three options. This means you get more floor space when they're little. Both of my beds (although different models) have a kind of 'edge' which stopped them falling out. The width is 80 as opposed to a single bed's 90, but I think that'll be ample for some time to come (my daughter is 5 and on the 'middle length' option at the moment.
