'Out of range' message on booting into Windoze

The problem: we have a dual boot Linux / Windows machine, which is currently failing to boot into Windows (the default is Linux).
It shows the 'first' Windows screen, but then before it gets to the screen showing accounts, a message appears in the middle of the screen saying "Out of range", and this message jumps diagonally down towards the bottom right corner of the screen.
The first 'problem' I noticed was that Windows wouldn't shut down one night, it said there was a program to close and gave the 'End Now / Cancel' choice. I'm afraid I don't know which program that was.
Next day it wouldn't boot.
I've tried booting into safe mode, but either that's not working or I've forgotten which F key to press, so feel free to remind me of that ...
Can anyone help? If further information is needed and it gets too technical I shall have to call for my interpreter, but I'll do my best ...
Oh, and there are a few things I find easier on Windows, plus the Linux bit of the machine has 'lost' its connection to the printer, so that's why I'd sometimes like to use it.

I would suggest reading Error messages when you start a Microsoft game: "Signal out of range" or "Out of scan range"
You will need to boot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard seen as you can't boot into windows

Thank you. I may wait for DH to get home with the laptop so that I can read one which playing with the other ...
but I don't think I'd tried F8. Never can remember which one it is!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
OK, I've managed to re-boot into Safe Mode, but the first thing on that list hasn't worked. And of course I can't access the internet in Safe Mode, I can't print the page you linked to in Linux, and DH hasn't come home with the laptop. It's a conspiracy ...
So for tonight, I've copied the page into Office and saved it to a shared drive. Hopefully tomorrow we can boot into Safe Mode, print that document, and work our way through it.
Next question will be how did this happen? DS3 denies all knowledge of changing settings, but it certainly wasn't me or DH!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
PS Would it worry you if I said that the Linux display seems different too? Text on main posts of MSE seems smaller, and the icon at the top of each tab is 'wrong' ... it's a blue circle in a rectangle rather than Martin's face. The Microsoft one seems OK. Screen resolution is 1024 x 768, and Refresh is 61 Hz.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Can anyone help me with this one/ I've just plugged a TFT monitor into an oldish pc running XP and I'm getting the "out of range" message on the screen. I've looked on Microsoft site but nothing applies.
Any ideas?Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0 -

SavvySue, Flyer. It looks to me as though both of you may have graphics card or display problems - the resolution is set higher than the monitor will accept. After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union

By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?0 -
its set at 640 x ? I'll lower it and see what happensEven if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0

That is possibly lower than the monitor will accept. It may also be set to the wrong frequencyits set at 640 x ? I'll lower it and see what happensAfter the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union

LCD monitors usually have a native refresh rate of 60Hz.
Anything much higher, it will block it and give an error message such as the one displayed.
As you were using a CRT monitor, the refresh rate was probably set higher via your graphics card.
Open your display properties and check the screen refresh rate.
(Right click blank area of desktop/ Properties/ Settings and look under monitor......maybe under Advanced settings).0
