Is there any way to get a recovery/OEM Windows disk from Dell? When I bought the Dell I stupidly did not upgrade the OS to XP Pro (which I need for networking and IIS etc) so when the computer arrived I bought a copy of XP and formatted the HD. However, my computer is not running well at all, so I want to restore it but cannot because “Dell don’t ship disk”. I phoned dell on the low cost number, asked for Customer Service and was transferred to India, where they tried to sell my a copy of Office! When I said that I want the restore CD for my computer they tried to sell me a copy of Windows XP. Needless to say after about 40 minutes I gave up. Does any have any suggestions?

Don't know what to suggest about the disk (I thought Dell shipped the original disks with their PCs; they did with mine a couple of years ago) but I wonder what it is that's "not running well". Maybe we can find a fix for you and get the thing up and running at full strength. Let us know what's not right and maybe someone will have suggestions.Dude wrote:my computer is not running well at all
By the way if you want to talk to a real person at Dell I would recommend Stephen Murphy (if he's still there) on 0870 907 5934. He was always very helpful with me on various issues.0 -
Dell don`t ship the recovery disk,it`s partitioned on the hard drive.0

The PC is very sluggish, i have flashed the bios, upgraded the firmware on DVD drive and download and installed the most up-to-date drivers. I think it may be a bios config setting?2 heads are better than 1….unless they are on the same body!0 -

If you keep hassling them they will relent, and post a OEM XP Disc
I deleted all the partitions before I installed XP as i did not think I would ever need to run XP Home.
Who would you suggest I hassle? Technical support or customer services?
I was just wondering what tactics other MSE people have used to get a disk of Dell?2 heads are better than 1….unless they are on the same body!0 -

Get a disk without delay or you will never be able to restore your PC, it was very unwise to get rid of the restore partition, so your only option is to use a XP CD.
A restore would of ghosted your hard drive back to factory settings.
You can do the same with a OEM XP CD from Dell but it will take
longer to do, moral is, dont delete it if you aint sure...0 -
A BIOS Setting will not be reset if you reinstall XP. However I don't believe that a BIOS Setting will slow your system down. It's probably just down to the junk you have on the system!
Hassle Dell for an OEM XP Disc as other posters have said!0 -
Hi Dude
You original post said "so when the computer arrived I bought a copy of XP and formatted the HD."
Have you lost/misplaced this copy of xp??
Well, the important part is the licence. You will now have 2 licences to use xp so borrow a disk off someone. Just enter your licence number and activate on-line.
As I understand it, when you buy something like Xp you are paying for the licence and you get the cd to use the licence for free. This is something software companies use to get out of jail if your installation breaks your computer, loses important files as you only bought a licence and the actual software is outside of any sale guarantees.

I got the CDs sent by hassling Dell.

Yeah I think if you hassle them enough they send the CD out to you. But as a rule Dell use a hidden partition to store the recovery image.0
