Why can you only get third party fire and theft?
No you purchased an annual policy and made a claim, you will be liable for the full cost

If you dont like writing the car off, ask the insurers for a settlement which would see you retain ownership then pay to get it repaired yourself

Problem solved and everyone is happy

I was told if i paid to get the car fixed i could not get comprehensive insurance for this car just third party fire and theft.
so i'm still waiting to find out what i will get for this car so i will just have to wait .
But i'm not happy because i only got my car in Dec 07 and someone went into me and i'm now left without a car.

Call a couple of other insurers to see if they're willing to insure a repaired write-off with comprehensive cover. Just because your insurance won't doesn't mean that another insurance won't.

Oh, and unless you've already accepted the settlement and received the money for it, the car is still yours - they can't just tell you that you can't have it back. If they do, it might be time to tell them to go procreate elsewhere...

The missus of a mate of mine parked her (old-ish) MX-5 in a heavy, immovable object. They retained the salvage (and thus got a reduced payout) and another mate of ours who runs a bodyshop repaired it using second-hand parts for around the same money that the insurance paid out. Car is looking good, drives straight and everybody is mostly happy.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I would say that this is still YOUR car
Tell them that the 1st offer was a load of crap ( or words to that effect)
and they should up the offer.
My Dad did this about 4years ago and refused 3 times.
The people who offer you the seetlement are told to give you as little as possible (for obvious reasons)
Then all they do is sell your car to a third party (happened to my brother recently) to try and get even more money back.
They are in BUSINESS to make money...not to GIVE you money, remember that when they offer you money for YOUR car.

Oh by the way they wont offer you less
If you dont ask you dont get!!

Dealer price is approx 4700 for the car based on 2.2 HDI SE 52 plate so seems more than reasonable too me.

Unless there was something of particular value inside it?

The alloys will form part of their offer - If you want the alloys back ask them for a new offer excluding the alloys , I hope you have disclosed the alloys to them though, if you havent probably wise not to mention them as it could affect them paying out
