  • OK, one at a time. Lets look at the VIA drivers. Does this post solve your problem?

And if it doesn't, tell us what happens.

BTW don't fret, it'll all get fixed.

Remote Assist in XP Start, Help Type Remote Assistance, if you know a Techie Person and they have a Broad band connection you can ask them to take control of your PC and they can fix bugs from there computer anywhere in the world.

I do it with a few mates when they get stuck, and they can take control of their PC back at any time, you can try with a email address or MSN Messenger which is easier
and then remove messenger if you like after help has been given.

MRU isn't anything critical. It stands for most recently used - in other words the history of what you've been doing, and should be thought of as optional to delete, as a privacy issue.

If you are the only user of your computer, then nobody else will be there to find out the last used music files, video clips, letters in Word, financial details in Excel etc.

If it does make a speed difference, then maybe this will be a clue (registry?) for the techie guys that are helping more than me, but I don't think it's the underlying problem.

Apologies if this didn't need saying - I just thought maybe StephenB had overlooked this, and in case you didn't know.

    Hi,

    Re post 13.

    Have you any further suggestions?

would you be prepared to link in to my machine to diagnose any problems I have?

Would it take much of your time up?

  • Oh sorry. I'm a bit confused between your current problems and those you had with ME. Can you clarify what's currently wrong?

Make sure you only have ONE firewall running and ONE virus checker.

You've clean installed XP, so there shouldn't be much junk about. Can I assume that your current install did once work as well as you wanted? If not, have you been installed the various motherboard drivers, video drivers etc from the various hardware manufacturers' sites?

Have you been to windowsupdate.microsoft.com to (a) get the criticals (more safety than speed) and (b) get some of the optionals (you'll want the drivers, but not everything else)?

It was intel who offered to do the Remote Assist - I've never performed it. (It reminds me too much of a Vulcan mind meld ...)
