Help

Earlier this year i had to call out the gas engineers that my housing association use, after five days waiting with no hot water or heating they turned up, a few weeks later my annual service was due, an engineer from the sme company turned up and when asked to look at a radiator that stayed on despite the hot weather he packed up and left, after following him out to ask him to stay i was headbutted and my nose was broken requiring an operation to have it put back in place, he is awaiting trial for abh. i have since had 3 more visits from same company to repair the problem, since the repair i cant get the heating to work, i"m a bit concerned that as it's a local company i could be victim of a bit of a hate campaign from his mates. Can i ask m housing association to get an independant company in to carry out the repairs at the associations cost? any help much appreciated ta

Do the HA know that one of this company's employees attacked you? If they don't, I'd phone them up and let them know (give them the crime number) and then tell them that the repairs they've done have left you without heat and you're requesting another company to come in. Have they left any paperwork to detail what repairs they've done and what they diagnose as the problem?

  • The HA are aware of the attack, and seem to be wiping their hands of it. i have no papaerwork about repairs carried out, but all repairs have to go thru HA.

Why in gods name did he attack you? And why did you ask him to stay?
    Sorry confused?
    Pawpurrs x ;)
  • i asked him to stay because i needed the boiler serviced as it was the annual service required by the landlord and i needed the radiator seen too, it was the hottest part of the summer and the radiator was on constantly! dont know why he attacked me, guess the court will sort that one out.

Contact the housing association in writing and send your letter by recorded delivery. In the letter ask them to contact you within 14 days include telephone numbers and your address in the actual text of the letter. All this is so they can't claim they haven't got your letter and can't contact you.

If they then don't sort the issue out in 3 weeks go to your local MP with a copy of the letter plus your court summons and any other information you have showing the employee attacked you.

MPs can be useful in sorting things like this out. Some are better than others and it doesn't matter what political party they are.

One of the problems is likely to be that the Housing Association will have a contract with this firm to cover all their properties.

Have you discussed your concerns with a senior member of staff at the HA?

You are entitled to a fully working heating system and they are entitled to know that their contractors are doing the job that they are paid to do.

Clearly we don't have the full picture but it would be surprising if an HA failed to deal with a a contractor whose employee had assaulted a tenant during a home visit for a repair/maintenance check.

Does your HA have a tenant support group/residents association who could offer you support on all of this?
  • the incident has been discussed with the HA, and both they and the contracting company are carrying out investigations, The engineer has been dismissed. there isnt anything more to put in the picture. I'm not concerned about the instant, this will be dealt with in court, its getting my heating sorted and as quickly as possible as i've got a young child thats my main concern. I know a lot of people wont believe that i was just assaulted but witnesses including my 8 year old daughter saw that i did nothing other than ask him to wait while i found my gas card. Ever since then i've had a less than suitable service from the company and my ha are doing nothing to help even after speaking to the 'main man' who deals with all the contracting.

I understand that will have a contract with the contractors, but surely i'm entitled to the best possible service and to have 4 callouts in 2 months, and still not have a fully working system would mean i'm not getting that. The ha assured me a senior technician would repair my boiler but a couple of lads turned up. There is a residents association but again this would be quite a lengthy process.
