Ran Ccleaner - now need advice

It's got a serious amount of issues both in the registry and the cleaner but I don't know what's safe to remove/fix. Is there anything I can check my list against so I don't delete things I shouldn't?

Thanks, Kate

  • My advice when looking at the registry - if in doubt leave it alone.

If you insist on deleting stuff please back up first - try this free programme
    Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
    • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
      http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
    • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
    • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

i use ccleaner and it will you give the option of backing up reg before you make any changes ,so you can restore any changes it has made i've never had any problems with anything it's deleted

Your quite right it does, but, if it stuffs your machine does it allow your to restore your files whilst in the recovery mode - I'm not sure. Erunt backs up the entire registry not just the deleted entries

Ive never used ccleaner on ANY computer, whereby it made a mess by deleting the issues
Id say just go for it

I use CCleaner a lot but recently discovered its somewhat strange stance on its own registry cleaner tool while browsing its forum to find out when a new version for the google chrome browser would be released (last week by the way so you might want to download the latest version of CCleaner)

Anyway I came across a thread in the forum which basically says that only computer experts or those who know what they are going should use the registry "fixer" on account of potential dangers.

    The advice is here

    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17925

After reading all that was said, I personally decided not to meddle with so-called registry "fixes" and "repairs" as the registry section of a computer is a dangerous place.

If you do decide to "fix" your registry, I think CCleaner's tool is about the safest there is but you MUST make a system restore point before doing so.

    Hope all this helps.
  • I also use ccleaner, do u still use the default settings? i do and luckily havent had any probs, seeing as jjscotman beat me to posting the link to the piriform forum, here is a link for the quick tour to usin ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/2-main-window

Ive just browsed that and they state that ccleaner DELETES bad registries, as opposed to trying to fix them, and that its totally safe to do so.

you will see that in my post i put the word "fix" into inverted commas. This is the word used by CCleaner itself in the tool.

as regards safety, I quote 2 separate posts early in the thread:

    1) "Is the cleaner bad? I honestly think it depends on the person using it. Its a tool and you must know how to use it and interpret the items it finds. If you look at the list and assume its 'safe' to remove all items just because CC found them, then sooner or later you will run into trouble."

2)"MOST users get very little benefit from such use and risk getting themselves into trouble.
MOST users are best advised to leave the Registry alone. It is an area for "specific users" to investigate."

To me these are pretty clear warnings.

But what seems 100% certain is the ABSOLUTE need to back up or do a system restore prior to using the registry tool.

The main cleaning aspect of CCleaner is truly excellent but for me the value of its registry tool is highly dubious - at least for normal non-expert .users
  • I've used the registry cleaner of CCleaner hundreds of times and had not a single problem as a result.

I've also ran other registry cleaners (Tune Up Utilities, RegClean) which found hundreds of entries ignored by CCleaner - I believe it errs very much on the side of caution.
Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.
