I have heard of these fund things that track the market, while I realise they will have had a battering at the moment, I am thinking that possibly the near future would be a good time to take some out.
I wondered if anyone had any link for basic information so I could read up on them please? And places that you buy them from.
Also info on share buying, etc and links to idiots guide would be gratefully recieved.
We have a smallish sum of money that I am trying to increase over the long term you see, 12-14 years for the kids, about 2 k. So I am toying with a tracker, plus some shares I guess.

My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

I asked a similar question last night and was advised to look at the following site ... http://www.investopedia.com/“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

FTSE trackers are medium/high risk with the potential to lose 50-60% in a 12 month period. You sound like you are new to this. Are you sure you are ready for that level of risk? Most inexperienced investors prefer to start out at the lower end of the risk scale.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0

Thanks both,
Yes Dunstoch, I am completely new to this.
Its money that I can afford to replace if I lost it. I am hoping that if I could find enough out about it that I could start some, while the market is really low, and hopefully gain then from the recovery.
Yet I don't even know how you work out what you gain or lose if the market changes. So really need an idiots guide I guess. My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

And most notably they pay financial advisers like Dunstonh little or no commision which is why the fees are low and they hate them and have all their glib sales patter against them ready.

Sorry mamzie, earlgray is a troll that follows me around and posts rubbish like that.

I am assuming that they spread the risk of the stocks over far more different kinds than I could myself, which is sorta what is attracting me.
But I know that I need to read up much more about them as well.My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

We have an IFA that deals with dhs pension pots, but when I've tried to ask about this sorta thing, I get the feeling that hes not really interested as its such a small amount.
But I would be willing to put in the time myself, and try and gain a little. Think I would be kicking myself in 5 years time if the market had recovered and I hadn't bothered. My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

Your technique is always to made ad homien attacks and in particular to call people "trolls".
Very sad that this board should allow people like you to plug their businesses here and give this sort of advice to maximise their profits: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=14867553#post14867553
You have encouraged huge numbers of people to lose their money for your profit.0 -

These are my thoughts too and I have some spare cash I'm willing to risk investing. I'm wondering whether I should be looking at some sort of portfolio though as I'd like a mix of short-term/fast buck shares (who doesn't!) as well as longer term investments if possible.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
If he works on commission, as most do, then they won't be keen on tracker funds that pay little or no commission. Those who are entirely fee based are usually more keen. Sadly, that's the problem with the system we have in getting truely unbiassed advice. We have an IFA that deals with dhs pension pots, but when I've tried to ask about this sorta thing, I get the feeling that hes not really interested as its such a small amount.0
