I have had problems writing to the pen drive all along, although there was one particular day when I was able to transfer data from some - but not all - of my floppies. So I am still working on two set-ups - floppies and the memory stick.

The only thing I can think of that I have put on the system since getting it new was MS Office 2003, which was also purchased from the shop where I have bought the rest of the stuff.

Yes, I can open the files and close them no problem on the pen drive. However, I tried to create a new spreadsheet a few days ago, but no way could I save it to the pen drive.

    Very frustrating!

So you can read the files that are already on the pen drive, just not write to it? But the guy in the shop was able to write the files from you old pen drive to the new one?

Deffo something with your operating system, not hardware - so don't take the case apart.

Have you installed anything or changed anything software-wise since you were last able to write to the pen?

Err...if you were able to read you are able to copy to another drive. All you do is select all files on the pen drive goto edit copy and then paste to the new one.

The drive has become stuck in write protect mode, it doesn't stop anything from being copied from it or even deleted from it. If write protected all it will do is stop anything being written to it.

Don't know enough about all the ins and outs of this problem - however, I do know that the pen was "performing" in the same manner for the more expert people in the shop as it had done for me.

I think if I remember rightly it was after I had transferred some of the total amount of the data that I started to have problems, as listed in message #1 on this thread. Since then, it has come up with all kinds of error messages when I have tried to save, alter, transfer, copy data etc etc.

As for messing with the tower and opening it up as previously suggested ... I would not dare! Certainly do not know enough to start messing around in that way.

Yes I know. I am just confirming that the shop guy was able to write to the new pen on their machine but Loobeylou was not able to on hers(?).

Rogerramjet, if the device is in write protect mode then you cannot delete anything from it. That is the point of the write protect mode. Deleting something from a file system is effectivly overwriting it with blank data.

    Hehe...what a wally I feel now :)

although technically it is not over written just marked as empty space on the drive :)
