If I can't get Virgin cable broadband, does that mean I can't get Tiscali?

Options
Just a quick question, I live in a student flat and would rather not pay for our phone line to be connected seen as I'm only here 9 months and I only want internet.

I know I'm not able to get Virgin in my area, does that mean I'm not likely to get Tiscali either? Is there any other companies where you don't need a phone line?

Thanks in advance!

  • Unless you get Mobile Broadband or Virgin Media Broadband only your need a phone line whoever you choose.

Tiscali:eek: is available in most places in some shape or form.

Are there any wireless hotspots around the area you could use? Even better, if a neighbour has a wireless network setup, maybe if you got friendly with them they might let you use theirs; you could even pay them a bit for it :T

if you're lucky there's a FON or BTFON hotspot very close. see http://maps.fon.com/ and http://btfon.com/ . in which case the most you'd have to pay is ~£30 for a la fonera router and you'll get free access to it.
  • What range do these BTFon wireless transmitters have?

  • depends what they're running on.

firstly, any BT OpenZone hotspot will allow FON members free access (i think it's limited per month, not sure how much). they're anything from regular 20m or so to city wide stuff like in london.

There's a load of BT HomeHubs running fon hotspots now, they have the same range as any 802.11g router (ie. you'll be lucky if you can get it outside the garden, but if you're in a terraced street...).

The La Fonera routers sold by FON are about the same (still 802.11g), they'll do half a street with line of sight but through walls.... i have one in my neighbours house connecting to a router in my house (bugalow), and it just does 1 wall, small hallway, another wall, small room, wall, 2 driveways, half a garage roof, another wall, and half my attic space. any more than that and it drops the signal.

ok cool ty, the nearest one is approx 1 mile away so and cant see it with my wirless connection!! So if I wanted to enable it on my BT homehub would I get something back for providing the service?

yup, free access to my network (via my fon hostpot). and that one a mile away. and every other fon and BTfon hotspot in the country. and I think you already get limited access to bt openzone hotspots, but if not this might give you it.
