The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Does anyone know if I can either get a larger print or an abridged version of this book?My 5 year old is pestering me to buy it, but since he's only just coming to grips with his key words, it's going to be a long time before he can read this.I have pointed this out and told him it's a reading age of 9-12 years but he wants me to read him a little bit each night. I don't want to discourage him as it's the first time he has ever shown an interest in a book, and it's the book he's asking for, not asking to go and see the Disney film. I just think I might struggle reading aloud each night from a paper back in standard print and I'm bothered about him being put off.

How about an audiobook version? You can sit and listen together.

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

  • The Chronicles of Narnia book set (about 7 books I think) is either £6.99 or £7.99 in World Books - one of the cheapie book shops in town. The same one is selling for almost £30 in some of the major bookshops!

  • Hi, I began reading this book to my son when he was about 5 - my husband and I must have read it to him at least 9 times as it was his favourite book for ages! Every night we read a little of the book, explaining any of the words he didn't know, and he never got tired of listening to it. It remains one of his favourites (he's 12 now) and he still remembers us reading it to him. My advice would be to give it a go - if he's that keen the story will hold his attention.

saw a few versions in WHSmiths at the weekend. my boy is 9 so he had a peek at the abridged versions but chose the full version. there were a few that some year 1 children would be okay with, or would at least enjoy having read to them.

i'm a big fan of audiobooks, they really help with attention span and listening skills. no substitute for reading to your child, but they can have both :-)

spud regularly giggles his head off to lemony snicket audiobooks, i can't really compete with stephen fry or tim curry when it comes to reading aloud. we buy the audiobooks mainly for car journeys. couldn't read to him, i'd be sick. the horrible history freebies have been great.
