T-Mobile Removes their upgrades for existing customers.

Hello Guys,

Just to let you know, T-Mobile have removed their upgrade policy regarding existing customers. I phoned them up today and was told that those customers who already have for example a discounted line rental can no longer at this moment have an upgrade to a new handset after their 12 month period is up:mad: At no point has T-mobile ever wrote to me to let me know about this so called "business decision" could be some legal issues here i think with regards to the original contract I signed. Anyway just thought I would share this with everyone.

Regards
Bale

I am afraid I do not understand.

T-Mobile's upgrade policy has always been that you can upgrade one month before the end of your commitment period (ie month 11 for a 12 month plan, month 17 for an 18 month plan etc). Therefore, if your contract was only for 12 months then you should be able to upgrade after the first 11 months. The only reason you would not be able to is if you are on an 18 month contract or if you had a bad payment record over the previous year.

Unless you mean that in order to get a new handset you must give up your line rental discount? In this case, any discounts which you get are given for the duration of the commitment period only, not indefinitely. At the point at which you do a new upgrade your upgrade entitlement is recalculated and if this is enough to cover a discount AND a handset then you can have both, if not then you can only get one.
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.

    Lawbunny,
Thanks for getting back to me.

To be honest I find the whole situation with T-mobile quite Bizaare. As you explianed thats exactly How i thought T-mobile's policy with regards to upgrades worked. I have been with them since December 2000 at which point my discounted line rental was put on, so as long as I dont cancel that will always be the case. In addition my payments to them are via direct debit and therefore I have never missed a payment with them since that time. So my record with them is excellent.

Its just that they are not willing to let exisitng customers upgrade who have this arrangment set up. What is even more suprising I was only talking to them last week about upgrading and they never mentioned at that time that this policy was being implmented infact on the contrary they were trying to do all they could so i could commit to them for a frther 12 months.

I think I am going to write to them and see what they have to say for them selves. If I dont get back a productive response I'll CANCEL with them.

    Regards
    Bale.
  • Id like to add that i was eligible for upgrade on the 17th of last month and was advised to wait until the 3rd week of my final month for a better deal, i.e more leverage.
I called on monday night to be told that they arent giving away new handsets to low volume users.

i was on a flext 20 package with 25% discount and never fully used my call allocation.

Cust Serv told me last night that they could discount my line rental by £10 a month (a tenner off the £20 tariff and not a tenner off £15)

anyhow, i downgraded to a combi plan for £15 a month and recieved my tenner off, so im now paying a fiver and have £180 to spend on a new phone.

    thats my tuppence worth over.

I also tried to upgrade a couple of days ago. I'm past the end of my 18 month Flext 20 contract (paying £15 per month). All they could offer me was a reduction to £10 per month for up to a further 6 months. Time to start looking elsewhere I think.

I apologise, I was not aware of this.

I'll have a look around at work next time I'm in and see if I can get some clarification on this.

In that case you wouldn't be entered into a 12/18 month contract then. Your just getting discount for 6 months without doing anything. Did you want a phone? or discount for a full contract? did they say it was only for 6 months of an 18month contract etc?

They said they had no decent phones to offer me on a renewed contract so I took the no obligation offer of a reduced fee for up to 6 months. I would have preferred to renew with a good replacement phone.
  • Just means in the coming months if a better phone comes out that you like you can see about getting it. I'd love a deal like that if I was to renew my contract, no obligation discount woohoo! lol

Agree if you are thinking of taking something like this do make sure that they aren't lumping you with a NEW CONTRACT of 18 (or even 24 months) with a reduction for only a short time- the maths doesn't add up if they are reducing it from £20 to £10 for 6 of 18 months you'd be better with a new (online) contract that is £15 for 18 months and that yes a new phone!

    Option 1 is £10x6 PLUS £20x12 = £300

    Option 2 is £15 x18 = £270

Obviously these are for 18months tied in. At a 12 month tie in they both cost £180 but with the 1st, no new phone- what a con:mad:

Being T-mobile and coming up to christmas, it will be their 6 months loyalty christmas bonus that they did last year as well. It means they'll give you discount for 6 months, then after that time you can upgrade into a 12/18 month contract with discount and/or phone (depending on what they can offer you) Or just continue paying normal line rental until you decide to commit. It isn't a con, it's just a little no contract bonus.
