Anyone know about satellite internet access?

Options
Hi,

Does anyone have any pointers on getting satellite access? I live WAY out in the country and live too far from the local exchange - as for cable - forget it!

Any good providers - what kind of costs are we looking at?

Thanks

  • Have you tried 3G first? You can usually try it for a week and see if it works for you and take it back if it doesn't - though obviously check that first.

If you have a 3G mobile phone and the 3G indicator lights up when you're at home then that network would be a good one to try.

We live out in the countryside 2 miles from the phone exchange and our Three 3G broadband runs at up to about 1600kbps.

I don't know much about satellite broadband, except that's it's usually a hybrid - the upload and download are not both on the satellite.

This is because you have a dish enough to receive a powerful downlink signal, but unless you install special kit it's not large enough to send back a strong enough signal to reach the satellite. So you'd still use an ordinary phone line as well, with broadband speed one way, dial-up the other.

As Mark suggests, look at the mobile networks
