Should I buy a present for my niece?

I visited each of my god-daughters and neices in hospital and would give them a nice silver bangle, keepsake card and then something for the parents. My youngest nephew however was born 2 days after I'd had a miscarriage. I didn't go to see him in hospital and didn't take him a keepsake card until he'd been home nearly a month.

I did get him a gold bangle (but that was partly guilt and partly because my DH is his god-father). But his mother is still hurt that I didn't visit and didn't take a gift round for him although she understands WHY I couldn't go to see him.

It's such a tricky one and you have to do what's best for you!

I'm with mishmash on this one.

If you want to buy a present then it shouldn't make any difference what they choose to do!

Get something small but meaningful and take the moral high ground as a bonus!

Just what I was going to say, bestpud. Definitely best to take the moral high ground.

You don't need to spend loads. A fiver at most.
How old is you daughter? Old enough to make something, or paint something, or do a picture? That way you could do something nice and personal, something "family" related but at the same time keep it cheap.

I would buy a very nice book with lots of illustrations and write a message inside it, that you're welcoming the child to your family etc...that way it will (hopefully) always be around and they will know how important they are to you. I think poetry books are especially good because the child can enjoy poems at different levels at different times in their lives....
