Warranty Claim - Reg Vardy = useless

Had strange problems with my car so took it to the dealer.
Dealer phoned me at about 1pm on the day and said they'd investigated and that the brake disks had somehow become warped and needed replacing, and the warped disks had also knackered the brake pads.
So I phoned the warranty companies 'claims line'. Could'nt get an answer until about 4-50pm by which time I'd had no choice but to tell the dealer to go ahead with the repairs.
Anyway, spoke with Autoprotect who said they couldnt authorise unless I faxed them proof of servicing, and they wanted receipts not just service book stamps. When I told them I couldnt do that at short notice, they said just send them an invoice from the garage.
So, did this, and they eventually sent me a cheque with no explanation of what it covered. Looks like all they paid for is the brake disks, and the fitting thereof. No sign of the brake pads, or the initial investigation cost! Worse still they havent refunded me the VAT part that I paid.
I spoke to them and they said they couldnt refund the VAT because the invoice from the garage was in my name not theirs. Seems a bit convenient to me.
I did try to explain to them that they're procedure of speaking to the claims line (not easy) and then having to have all the service receipts ready to dfax makes it impossible to get stuff authorised on the day and, as such, is unfair. But I guess they know that and dont care !

Warped discs are usually due to excessively heavy braking, so by all accounts probably user problem, not technically a warrenty issue. I'd say you were fortunate to get any payout. I had a warrenty claim rejected on the same grounds...:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. my mate insists that you cannot warp brakes - he says its a build up of brake debris left from when you sit with your foot on the brake after some heavy braking
Im of the opinion that they do warp due to the the hot pad being held against them after heavy braking
either way between us we agree that they do cause some juddering when driving heave and sitting with your foot on the brake
This in my eyes should not be covered by a warranty0 -

Car is an automatic so there is a certain amount of having your foot on the brakes.
And, so, I dont brake heavily. It is a heavy car though - Kia Sedona.
There was more then some juddering. Disks has warped well out of shape and knackered the pads too.0 -

do you sit with your foot on the brake when stationary?0 -

Its an Automatic. So, yes, some of the time.0 -
Brake discs do not warp. They cannot warp. They are big solid chunks of iron.
Brake discs suffer from a buildup of pad residue which makes the braking surface uneven, which causes the modulation you feel on the pedal. It is easily fixed by either replacing the discs, or taking the car to have the discs skimmed on a lathe.
Google 'brake disc lathe'
I do not think you can possibly damage any brake components, although when replacing discs you should also replace the pads at the same time.0 -

Pew Pew Has No Clue is a clueless moron. Ignore absolutely every bit of mechanical advice that clueless gimp says. Yes you can warp brakes. Your opinion is correct - that's a prime way of warping them along with seized calipers and prolonged braking. He's talking rubbish.
And if you want to argue, Pew Pew Has No Clue, I'm quite happy to stick up my CGLI in Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles and years of experience as a mechanic in main dealerships anything you think you've had. Oh and you might want to tell a metallurgist you can't bend iron because it's a large flat disc, they obviously don't know as much as you appear to.
The juddering however can be caused by other things. If the bushes are worn in the track control arms, you get the same effect as warped discs which is why it's always a good idea to do a "run out" test on the discs.
Back to the warranty, brake pads are classed as a consumable item so no guarantees and virtually all warranties exclude them.0 -
Ummmm,
My car has a warped brake disc, I have a replacement set, just keep putting off changing them over.
When I change them I'll try to photograph the disc in such a way to show the warp, perhaps lying on a flat surface.0 -
