Hardship funds aren't necessarily grants, AFAIK. It's exactly where the OP needs to do, because s/he's got to live off something -- whether it's a loan or a grant, hardship funds are exactly for this kind of emergency situation. Not everyone's parents can find the necessary money at short notice, and not everyone can get a job ASAP.

This is a very short term gain long term pain suggestion.

While the magazine and actual donation may be quite pleasant, as is the modest income generated, I seem to recall that legislation passed not so long ago means that you could eventually be liable for the financial burden of maintaining a child!
