It could have been worse. He could have been sitting next to a group of disable orphans with 3 years to live, whos orphanage had just burnt down and they have just put the insurance money into an icesave account so they could rebuild their home in a few months.
And they put it in there on monday.

That's about the only case study more depressing than the one on CH4.
...and the orphans were holding old tatty teddy bears and sooty blankets.

    There we go, bit worse.

and to describe him as a cripple in comparison to Martin lewis being a rich man, is rather patronising.

Erm, that was the point I was trying to put across. The producers eyes must have lit up when they heard they had someone who was in a wheelchair, had savings in icesave AND retired to put next to successful mr lewis...
No one can look good next to such a depressing case.

Snow is a seasoned interviewer and very good at his Job. Martin was sat there fielding Snow's questions and hitting a few boundries. The underlying message that he kept saying was keep your savings within the deposit guarantee level. This is nothing new, he's been saying it til he's blue in the face, he's often on the Jeremy Vine show, and he says it all the time. Its time the "Lets blame someone bar me brigade" got off the guys back. If you don't like what he has to say, don't visit the website.

I think the subject is a little TOO harsh here... Martin came accross quite well considering the dreadful journalism by c4!

Martin has been screaming about the compensation limit for a fair old time, and the warnings have finally been taken on by most of the printed press over the last few months. Even my non-internet savvy parent's and the in laws have been moving their savings about to take account of the £35k limit, through martin's warnings in newspapers.

Recent coverage has been awful - journalists are blaming everyone and anyone. At least the posts on here have been accurate, when i've heard dreadful advice on Radio 5 (Once heard someone say compensation is per account, so the best thing to do was to have multiple accounts in the same institution!) Keep up the good work!

I thought Martin Lewis carried himself quite well.

I find it really really amazing that people are blaming Martin Lewis for whats happened. As has been mentioned many times before on here, no one forced people to put their money into Icesave or KE.

As is the case in this day and age, people are always quick to find a scapegoat and not look at themselves for whats happened. People have become idle and want other people to do the research for them

I agree with you. Two things about the mass media: one, they do love to build someone up just so as to be able to knock them down; two, Channel 4 would have been looking for a different "angle" to the biggest popular news story of the day, and I must say it was scraping the barrel to ramp up the emotion quotient by fielding someone in a wheel chair.

No one in the world, I believe, would have expected the Iceland government to lie about its compensation fund - when I heard Alistair Darling this morning telling us that Iceland had nothing in its compensation fund, I thought his voice was dripping with contempt for the Iceland government - and let us hope that having all its assets in the UK frozen will teach Iceland a lesson never to be forgotten.

MSE has changed many people's lives for the better - perhaps even saved some lives - it is a fantastic resource. But each person's circumstances and priorities are different, and each has to take the responsibility for their own decisions.

  • Having heard about all the problems the site was happening I thought I would have a look. It just goes to show how careful you need to be these days regarding giving out information a lot of people think its advice to be followed.

Martins problems should serve as a reminder to all of us that accountable advice does have to be paid for in any walk of life.

  • One other thing.

Surely its a good thing that C4 chose to allow a disabled person a platform to make a point on a financial matter maybe it would not be such a shock if it happened more often.

Good post ... sums both sides up well I think.

    - martin lewis shouldnt have this "financial guru" claim (his words not mine) as events have shown he is little more clued up than anyone else .. maybe less so even.

    - people should realise he does have limits and I think the bank charges thing went to his head (and even then he just joined a bandwagon that had been on the go for years before he "championed it").

He is just a forum owner .. if you want to save 50p on a pizza you are in the right place. If you want serious AND ACCOUNTABLE financial advice go elsewhere.

I think he couldnt believe his luck on riding on the back of the growing bank charges revolt .. and now he has pushed himself too far.

I see his reassurance about the guarrantee (in the small print) he is now terming as a strong warning .. didnt read that to me.

At the very least he should renounce the ludricous self-promoting claim to be a "financial guru" .. just seems ridiculous now.
