this is why i try to support local animal rescue charities who have a no-kill policy. i do of course admire and value much of the work of the rscpa but the smaller charities could really do with some more money!0 -
I work for the Cats Protection at the fieldwork end and also foster.
We have found the 'credit crunch' has really started to come home - dumped cats, cats being handed in by people who can no longer afford them and those being evicted from their homes.
It is a double edged sword, we are getting more requests for cats to come into our car (currently have a waiting list in excess of 200 and and we can take between 20-30 at anyone time) but once in the cats aren't going anywhere. People are too worried financially to take on a pet at the moment so our units are stagnant and the waiting list grows.
All I can say is people please get your animals neutered and if you need financial help to do so investigate your local charities for their policies.0 -

The rescue centre I foster for has a no destroy policy, if no home is found for a dog then it stays with the foster carer for as long as that foster carer wants.
The thing with the RSPCA is that it has more dogs/cats for rehoming then any other rescue and it cannot keep all animals in shelters or pounds because of the amount that come in, this is why they have started to ask for foster carers as well, so please don't blame the RSPCA for the dogs/cats they have to PTS, I'm sure they try hard to re-home them first.0 -
I would love a dog, and already have a cat, the credit crunch is tough but i would always find a way of looking after the pets, they are not expensive to look after.
Thanks to all those who are working for all the poor pets that are abandoned at this tough time.

7 or 8 years ago I had my own personal credit crunch (divorce) and was in serious money troubles as a result.......the last thing I would have wanted to do was rehome my dogs (NOT dump) but at one very low point I did wonder if it would be the best thing for them.
I was working 3 jobs, one fulltime and two part time and was rarely at home, even then I was robbing Peter to pay Paul. My poor dogs got used to being walked at 4am & 11pm, I dreaded a vet bill and they ( and I) were fed as cheaply as possible. For about a year the only time I spent with them apart from walks was in the car or asleep......I use to take them with me as I delivered pizzas (don't tell Pizza Hut:o ) and when I was office cleaning so they "only" spent the time I was at the fulltime job alone. Luckily I somehow bumbled through that horrific year or so but if I'd had a big vet bill, or one of my many creditors had demanded more money I would've had to make some very tough decisions so I can understand why so many pets are in rescue and why people are reluctant to take on a new pet at the moment.....not that I condone dumping a pet btw.
When I took on the pets my life was very different......plenty of time for them, no money problems etc but I was young and very stupid when I married a secret gambler and to keep my house I ended up paying off a lot of his debt in lieu of his share of the house but, to me, it just proves that you never know what's going to happen in life and sadly sometimes the pets suffer along with their familes.....not everyone who gives up a pet didn't care about them or put the thought in before getting them. I would have happily given up the house and rented if I thought that would help me keep my animals but the chance of getting a rental that would allow my menagerie was slim to nil, not that I would have had a deposit to put down after the house sale.
Luckily things are MUCH better for me these days:j but I can see a lot of people who are going to be going through those horrible times in the very near future.........Sorry to be so pessimistic:o0 -

A good honest post Orlao, and I suppose it addresses the root of my question - I can understand that paying for pets can just become too much when circumstances change, and that for some, letting them go elsewhere may be best overall.
However, you make it very clear that you would hand them in to rescue, rather than dump them - I can respect and empathise with people who take this route.
I work with young people and families and know how tough some people's experiences can be, and can understand how the demands a dog makes could become just another cause of stress, and it all become too much.
However, I have known homeless people who feed their dog before themselves, and wealthy people whose dogs are chained up in the back yard, day in day out, so I guess there is more to it than finances for many, although the credit crunch will undoubtedly affect some dog owners more than others.0 -
My dog gets fed on Tesco Value dog food and leftovers = £1.59 per month, that and yearly vacination booster of £25 is hardly enough to warrent dumping a dog in a credit crunch!
A big vets bill would certainly hurt but I agree with the earlier posters that I would get rid of my husband before the dog ... and I quite like my husband
