AFAIK you can bid any amount from the minimum specified for a particular item. When they are all sold, everyone who has bid pays the lowest price, plus whatever the postage is. The saucepans are presumably quite heavy, but they seem to charge at least £7.99 even for small items. ps I have just looked at their help page:

it seems that there are different types of auctions - last night's must have been a Fixed Price Auction, most of them are Falling Price. HTH0 -
The pans last night and the 2 items the OP mentioned were glitches where the company has listed them by accident (or very clever marketing ) at a £1.00 BUY NOW price instead of a £1.00 BID FROM price.
Us lucky ones got in quick. Woo Hoo.
Not sure how the whole sysym in general works but do not care. I will only use them for their mistakes!:j0 -
