click on automatic updates, and set the time.

Did you see my earlier (correcting) post, you have two firewalls enabled now, if you see any adverse effects of having two going at once, disable one of them..

I know intel is clued up.., (I have never tried the 2 together), so you are probably ok with 2 going, and when you buy the router, you'll have 3, so you'll be super-safe..

Have used Zonealarm for years, but of late the pro version is starting to get a bit bloaty for my tastes. I didn't like it's calling home behaviour, something firewalls are supposed to stop, not implement. Have reverted to the free simpler version.

You've got at least 3 techies here giving you some good (and immediate) advice, so if you hit problems with the router, come back and we will try to help..

Windows Firewall and Sygate are fine to run side by side, but Sygate will soon be no more so a change over to Zonealarm might be neccesary...

    hello....

Was not aware of that... will sygate let know when it's not working anymore????

In answer to your "can they get at my pc if my son is on at the same time" question..

If you mean via limewire, then the short answer is no. (Although I haven't used it, so am no expert).

But, generally any PC that is connected to the internet, is potentially hackable, but that is what all these firewalls do, protect your data from unsolicited intrusions.

Make sure you have the XP firewall on your new laptop switched on, and you'll be fine. Also, if you end up going fully wireless, rather than one wired PC, and one wireless laptop, then turn the "wireless isolation" setting on in the router config screen.

The router will protect your PC from direct hack attempts, and your XP firewall will isolate you from your son's PC..

No it will still work but it wont be updated anymore via the sygate website as the makers of Norton have just aquired sygate... shame really.

Norton is now under Symantec. well has been for ages now.

This is what happens when i try and enter places like the control panel.. my computer light that says it's doing something is now not just flashing but is just on all the time.. it's slowed up a million times worse and so i have turned off the updates and windows firewall and it's just as bad... I think it's windows updates flooding me as i have kept having little boxes come up for ages saying they are trying to access with a yes or no button and i always press no...

    Have I broken it?????

    PLLLEEEESSSSSSEEEE>>>>>>HHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can you be more specific, what do the messages say?

if it is really windows update, it should calm down when it has finished.. so don't panic..

oh beautiful... I'm back... honestly it was taking about 5 minutes to do anything.... e.g.. if I press the thanks button it takes about 5-10 seconds.. well it was taking 3- 5 minures... I have done nothing more than turn the firewall and updates back off and a short while later I am back to normal... never going to that bloody control panel again it hates me.. it's got to be the windows updates... that yes no box i was talking about has not hppened today but over the months.. when I am on line I get a little grey box saying windows are try to access etc.. with a yes no box and I always click no.

Thanks anyway all... I love the people on this site..
