I'm a tax payer and don't have an icesave account, but I certainly don't resent seeing our government helping other households who've been stitched up by the iceland government's approach to shoring up their financial system - it's an unusual situation and noone expected it to go this badly wrong; the idea that banks this large would be failing left right and centre seemed alien to me only a few months ago.

I think this is exactly the sort of thing our government is supposed to help out with and I'm glad to see they're looking after their own

I am a tax payer and don't have an icesave account, but I certainly DO resent seeing our government giving handouts to those rate tart dopes who lost their money in that toy bank. And you are quite wrong, kamizuri when you say "it is an unusual situation and no one expected it to go this badly wrong." Incompetence and rip-offs are not unusual; and I, and millions like me, took one look at these toy banks and knew that they stank and that the people running them didn't know a butt from a hole in the ground.

If a gambler puts £50,000 on a horse and it comes in last, are you saying the taxpayer gives him his 50 Gs back?

I resent having to pay for other people's stuck on stupidity. If they've lost their money, they should get an extra job as penance for being as dumb as bricks.

What an amazingly perceptive person you are.. What a pity you didn't share your perception with all those councils, police authority's Government institutions who put money in, and of course the FSA who licensed the bank.

I don't remember seeing a message from you berating those savers in that "safe" bank Northern Rock when the government bailed them out !

Would this be the same obviously useless bank that the Audit Commission , Councils using auditor approval, and charities put their money into? The one that had a 5 star rating when I put my money in last December?
This was a perfectly good bank and would have survived if it hadn't been for a mad panic run on it. It must still have a lot of reserves left because of fixed rate investments, I doubt it will need as much bailing out as some people think.

So what did you put your wiser money into, Northern Rock or Bradford & Bingley?

Unfortunately fixed rate investments aren't reserves. They are liabilities. If assets and liabilities don't balance up the bank cannot trade for any period of time.

By the way, I am also getting a bit fed up of the ever growing army of people who have a degree in hindsight on this one.

They were allowed to trade in the UK and as such I think there is a responsibility with the authorities here.

Over and above this responsibility is the absolutely essential requirement to ensure the public keep faith in the banking system. Refunding those individual savers with Icelandic savings is merely a small part of this.

You don't know the difference of putting £50k on a horse and saving your cash in a UK registered bank; yet somehow you claim to be more knowledgeable about saving money than the rest of us?
Hardly worth commenting further really is it!

If the banks are getting some of my tax contributions then why shouldn't everyone else? Think of it as a tax rebate if it makes it any easier for you to deal with.

If the gambler was given an FSA approved assurance that he will be refunded anything up to £50k if he lost, before he put his bet on, then yes.

I am also a tax payer. I pay a lot of tax.

Tell me EVERYTHING you use the government for and I will refuse to pay tax for it as a result of you not bailing out a GUARANTEED savings account.

    Deal?
