I've just updated the Icelandic section of safe savings. To my interpretation Alaistair Darling effectively promoised people would get their £50,000

There will be a statement in the house of commons later.

UPDATE:

Its now 'looking' like all cash will be coming back not just £50,000 though a statement and exact clarification is due later... but don't get your hopes up until we KNOW for sure.

It was confirmed yesterday there will only be ONE form to fill in regardless, the question was "who will pay" will Iceland fulfill its obligation for the first £16,000.

Now we're (my interpretation not guaranteed) hearing "someone will pay", which is of course most important.

Expect good news for those of us with under 50k

If they can bail out !!!!!!!!s who over lend and take stupid risks then I am sure those of us who simply want to "save" money can be looked after.
It's far better to be penny wise than pound foolish.

He just said on the Today Programme that UK savers in Icesave will get 100% of deposits back, from the UK government.

Darling just confirmed this on BBC Radio 4. UK government to ensure that all Icesave depositors get their money back.

Hopefully, as suggested by others on this site, HMG will be seizing Icelandic assets to pay for it.
