Callella family holidays next week-HELP!

In a spur of a moment I have booked holidays for us (me, husband, 2 boys -10,4) and so we are off to Callella next Tuesday. My boys are looking forward very much as this is our very first holidays abroad. Since I booked it I have done a bit of research and now I really worry as the hotel we are going to stay doesn't have very good reviews, weather might be not as great as they are expecting... And I have no idea what to pack. Is it gonna be freezing, warm or cold in Spain in October? Is there anything to do in case it rains? And what families do on seaside holidays in Spain in mid October? Do we have a chance at least to get inside the sea? Or is it going to be cold this time of the year?
I booked the holidays with fleetway travel, has anybody have any experience with them? We are flying from Luton to Girona in the evening and arriving to the hotel just before midnight. Is it gonna be cold? Should I pack lots of jumpers?

  • Mid October on the Costa Brava - expect anything! If you are lucky it will be warm enough to get on the beach but I can't vouch for the sea! Evenings will be chilly so certainly take some jumpers. I would say also a very good chance of rain showers so pack rain jackets too. Callella is on the train line to Barcelona so if it's wet you could always spend a day there. I hope the weather is kind to you but pack for all eventualities just in case.

THere is a fantastic theme park about an hour from Callela which kids should enjoy, also Barcelona has alot to offer and is only an hour away on the train. And of course you can take them to barcelona football stadium.

There is a fantastic english bar called Pepe's run by a spanish guy called Pepe (obviously ) and his london wife. The food is excellent and very reasonable. the atmosphere is great and so is the entertainment.

We went last year in late september and it was cold but sunny not sure what oct will be like.

    Hope you enjoy

Here is a link to the Barcelona weather forecast, I know it is a little away from where you are going but it may give you an idea.

Thank you very much. We will definitely go to Barcelona for a day. Boys will love the theme park too.
I feel a bit better now after your replies. Now I know I definitely need raincoats and jumpers.

We went to Callela exactly this week 10th october the weather was really good and we had a lovely time. We stayed at the Calella palace. Calella is not the most beautiful place but the beach is fine and there are shops for a wander in the town. We had only one day that rained. it was a really nice week for not a lot of money I would'nt worry.

Thanks cannyscot, we are going to stay in Esplai and quite looking forward to it as living in central London, it will definitely be different for us. I hope the weather will be ok; I checked the link what stw48 sent and there is rain everyday in the picture. My husband hates rain, but hopefully even rain at the seaside is nicer than in the centre of London.

  • Danka, I should have added this to my previous reply! We went up to Callella on the train for half a day from Barcelona a couple of years ago in January - we were sitting at an open-air cafe WITHOUT COATS for lunch it was so warm. So you cannot predict what the weather could be like these days! Once again, hope it's kind to you and enjoy your holiday.

  • Callela is a nice place - loads to do in the area - the Eslpi is an OK hotel, and it will be warmer than the UK for a start!

Port Aventura (Universal Studio's) in Salou is a daytrip away too - and if you have kids - they will LOVE that! for a night out there is the Medieval Castle and as everyone has said, Barcelona, go the football stadium, the Zoo, the harbour and Las Ramblas. also worth a look is the Olympic stadium and the Pueblo Espana (There arethose open top tour busses, like they have in London, where you can buy a days ticket and get on and off at all attractions all day)

eating out? - Have a Catalan Salad, and try a liquer called 'Ponche Cabellero' don't be put off by the silver bottle - its great!

    Enjoy your holiday!

We were in Calella last week, used it as a base for Barcelona. I wore a skimpy top and didnt start to feel chilly till about 9.30-10pm. Forecast predicted rain but we never saw it.

Barcelona is great, get a metro/bus ticket combined, just hop on and off, really simple to use, expect you're used to it coming from London.
