ADSL Max?

Anybody know what "ADSL Max" is?? This is what my BT line report says:
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 512Kbps. However, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.
Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 500Kbps or greater.
The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.
Thank you for your interest.

MaxDSL is something BT wholesale are still trialling (and have been since approx April 2005 I believe). Basically, its a service which runs at up to 8Mbps download speed and using new equipment it will automatically set your connection with an appropriate download speed (based on the actual quality of service you receive when first connected).
Some ISP's are involved in the trials, and I think out of the 5000 or so exchanges in the UK there are 25 of them involved.
MaxDSL is not expected to be made a live product until at least April 2006 now.
If you live in an area where you have LLU providers, then consider them - they are usually cheaper than any other ISP's service and can provide up to 8Mbps or even 24Mbps download speeds. The best you can currently get via an ISP which use BTwholesale's equipment is only 2Mbps.
Check out Be* Un limited, Bulldog, Freedom2surf, UKOnline, HomeChoice. I know people using freedom2surf and have good experiences. UKonline, I know people that have problems and can't leave due to 12 month contract. I have used Bulldog (but moved away due to slow DNS) and now many others that are fine with Bulldog. I am now with Be*, and am receiving an excellent service at 17.5Mbps for just £20 per month.0
