Blinds - need a little advice

I need 2 bedroom black out roller blinds.. one is 176 cm wide the other 236cm
Plus a kitchen blind at 176cm
And a lounge blind (vertical? its a full height window)

my questions:
- looking on sites like dunelm and homebase is they dont seem to do a blind longer than 180cm
- what would you go for in the kitchen? the window looks out the front and 2 neigbours front doors are very close so can see in when they are opening their doors, i was thinking vertical could be set to block the neighbours view, or venetian possibly
- lounge is currently curtains but has a recess and i was thinking a vertical blind might make the room look bigger? or is this too office like for a lounge?

i dont mind cutting the blinds to size, although if somebody has a recommendation that can do made to measure then all the better

all replies much appreciated :)

I got a made to measure blind for my kitchen from www.web-blinds.com and they were very good. Plus they're on Quidco. :D

Just tried their quoter and their width range is 40cm to 200cm, so they don't do them wide enough for your 236cm requirement (that's a really wide window you have!). However, they do say they might be able to make ones outside the range anyway and you can call them. They have a reasonable selection of patterns for blackouts...

I personally wouldn't have vertical blinds in any room except a study because to me they are associated with working in offices with 80s style hangovers. :)

just did an example for the smaller window, their price is £40 whereas i can get a 180cm blind from dunelm for £18 and it says blackout as well.. only thing is the web -blind is made to measure but i dont think its worth double for that...
  • my big window (2.36m) doesnt look extra-big to me.. but i guess i've never seen a roller blind that wide anywhere. i think it had curtains before but id rather some sort of blind in the recess so it does impose into the room like curtains.

Put the Quidco discount code in to double check the discounted price.

I have fiddled with blinds cutting them and won't do it anymore, it is a pain in the neck, better to spend the time on this website making sure you are saving money than fiddling with blinds.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • you can buy made to measure backout blinds upto 3m wide from 247 blinds. You can also use discount code '247faf' for 2.5% discount. This was supposed to run out ages ago but still works.

NOTE ABOUT BLACKOUT BLINDS.... the fabric normally called black-out blocks light from going through... thats simple. Black-out blinds however, only work if that fabric is encased in a 4 sided slide-in system that costs the earth. I know of a very few specialsts that create NO LIGHT AT ALL B.O.B's. A roler blind will let light thru' at the sides, bottom and top. The besr method to stop as much of this as poss' is to mount them on the outside of the recess and overlap window size by at least 6" (120mm) top, sides and bottom.

I work in the blinds & curtain industry. If you want to buy a blind from a DIY store then you will pay less, but have to replace twice as quickly! They are rubbish. Roller blind barrels are made out of cardboard instead of aluminium, the mechanisms are flimsy and break in no time. Plus you have the added hassle of cutting these things to size.

If you want to buy something that will last for at least 2 years, then I'd strongly recommend you buy a made to measure from a proper blinds firm and not a store like Dunelm or B&Q.

If however, you are vacating the property within 6 months and don't care about them lasting then obviously go for the cheap DIY option ;)
  • Hi. I've found some blinds which have a longer drop of 210cm. These are a roller blind but with a difference. They sort of have two layers which give light control. Have a look here. http://www.cwfurnishings.co.uk/swish-sheer-elegance-blind-system-324-c.asp

There isn't any blackout blind here but it may be worth asking.
  • If you want an online calculator for blackout rollers, try this site:

    http://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/roller_blinds.asp

A blackout in Tranquility fabric comes out at £69 from the size you gave. It is a made to measure item delivered within 7 working days.

This isn't my company (just in case anyone thinks I am trying to sell my products!) but they have a good reputation.
  • Look in your local free newsapaper or yellow pages , just fone sumone up who will come out measure ur windows and show you samples...its not that expensive,,,i have recently gone for chunky venitian blinds and in the bathroom chrome venitian blinds , i am very pleased with the result......
