Icesave/Kaupthing - is Martin to blame?

  • Lots of people going off half-cocked on here today!

    1. No-one has lost anything, yet.
    2. It is likely that anything 'lost' will be covered by compensation, but the bit covered by the Iceland scheme is to be confirmed.
    3. We all knew the risks when we sent the cheques. If you didn't then you did not read everything that has always been written on this site. Blaming anyone but yourself is an understandable but rather futile exercise in making yourself feel better.

I think a lot of people on this site blame martin for losing their money from icesave. The guy has recommended icesave for months and it regularly featured in the best savings feature. I trusted martin's advice and now i have lost a great deal of money. Thanks a lot mate.

Jeez, so now people are looking to blame someone....anyone?

    - YOU decided to open an account with Icesave and put your savings there. YOU and only YOU. Take responsibility yourself, or maybe you don't think for yourself? Which is it?

    - Icesave were certainly featured on Best Buy tables/features regularly, for perfectly good reasons. But equally they've been just as regularly featured on "Are your savings safe" features so nothing has been hidden from you and the downside explained as much as the upside. Or did you not read those bits?

    - You think MSE/Martin are the only place to have featured Icesave on Best Buy tables?

Nobody forced you to to anything, both sides of the case for Icesave have been discussed ad nauseam for months, yet you still want to blame someone else for YOUR decision? Give me a break!

Oh yeah, and nobody has lost any money yet. At least get that fact in your head.

The problem is the culture of some of this sites users who go for the very cheapest deal or the highest rate without any personal accountablilty for that decision.

I agree, but is that culture not encouraged by sites that label the high interest accounts from unstable banks as 'best buys'?

Can we all spare for a thought for the people in the contact centres asking talking to hundreds of customers who are doing their best to calm people down when they don't have a lot to go on.

It really must feel like a rock and a hard place for them right now.

Absolutely, I really feel for them in these troubled times. Some must be worrying about their jobs while having to calm down all of us. I have to say the people at Kaupthing in Isle of Man have been superb, helpful, and efficient. I feel so sorry they've been dragged into all this mess.

I don't think Martin is to blame.

I too have money in IceSave (7K, which I can't access any more). Yes - I'd never heard of IceSave until I read about them on here. And yes, based on Martin's best buy article, I, like so many others on here, opted to put money into IceSave.

But is Martin to blame? Well, in a word, no.

Before I opened my IceSave account, I actually sat down and read all the terms and conditions. I knew it had an Icelandic parent. And at the time I thought it was a safe bet. I'd never have thought in a million years that I'd be in the position of not being able to access my money, as I am today. Of course I'm concerned about my money. But it's early days and the situation isn't yet clear. But do I blame anyone else but myself for putting my money into IceSave? Of course not - it was completely my decision and no-one forced me to do it.

I've been using this site for years and it's consistently delivered for me - I've saved a fortune by coming here. And I'll continue to come here in the future.

No one has lost any money (including me with £17k in Icesave).

I do however have a hangover today. In the spirit of the aimless scapegoating by people refusing to take responsibility for their own actions - i think I am going to hold the whisky distillery in question responsible rather than admitting it was my own choice to drink all the whisky. After all - I didn't bother to find out that whisky could give you a hangover so it must be someone else's fault right?

I don't blame Martin for this. I hadn't heard of Icesave before coming on here, and actually I don't recall reading about the "passport" scheme until last night..

I think Martin is a top bloke and I always enjoy seeing him on TV.

We can only hope for the best.
  • it looks like it might take a while to get the money back will this be including interest upto today? and when we get this money back i guess ive now lost out as there was a few years worth of isa deposits that im unable to transfer to another provider?
  • This is the most ridiculous thread I've read all day.

IceSave was recommended to me by my own financial advisor. Once given the info I looked it up on the internet and saw that it featured as Martin's Best Buy and on other sites/newspapers etc.

Yes, I could stand to lose what I have saved and I will be devastated as it has taken me a long time to save what I have. But no one can be blamed for any of this, I'm a grown up and it was my decision to sign the dotted line. No one could have predicted this happening a year ago when I signed up for the account.

I think the service that Martin gives on this site is superb and has help me save a lot of money in the past and I will continue to use it in the future.

Blame everyone except yourself you muppets! If you hadn't tried to withdraw your savings en masse like the bunch of headless chickens they may not have had to put the bank into administration,.You with your continual scaremongering and hasty actions caused the run on the bank, not Martin, if I were him I'd ban the lot of you muppets! :T
