Halifax (or more correctly, HBOS) have not 'gone under' - a takeover by LTSB has been OK'd by the respective managements and the government, but as of today HBOS is still trading as a separate entity. The reason the Halifax & the Bradford & Bingley went under ...
In case you hadn't noticed, A&L have been taken over by Abbey/Santander.As opose to LTSB A&L etc who have exemplerary records.0 -

That's not because of the credit crunch, is it though? Given their quite rapid growth (thanks in no small part to people bigging up their interest rates/£100 incentives/free overdrafts) I could understand Santander wanting a part of that action. It gives a huge number of customers and deposits to Santander as well, given A&L's Girobank heritage and also their very successful business operating collection accounts for bill payments and such (take a look at some of your bills sometime, you're bound to see an A&L logo on at least one of them.)0 -

Ha Ha HA - A&L were on a one way trip to Northern Rock / B&B land if the Santander takeover had not gone through, even the directors said so.I think....0 -

HSBC - which is what this thread was originally about - are different to other banks in another way too. They are the only one of the major institutions that has more customers funds on deposit than they have lent out.0

HSBC Holdings plc has just given HSBC Bank plc some £750,000,000.0
