BT Penalty Charges

A warning for anyone receiving a call from BT about changing their existing call package. I had been a BT customer for about 15 years until I recently moved to another supplier to incorporate broadband into my package. I received a final bill from BT and was stunned to discover a Penalty charge of £103.09. Their explanation was that earlier in the year I had taken out a new friends and evening weekend plan and that this was part of the contract.
I did indeed take out this plan but really just to get rid of the salesman (stupid, I know!)- after all, all I had to do was say yes. At no time was I informed that I would then be treated like a new customer and would be subject to any penalty charges if I left. When I complained about my final bill I was given the usual guff about it all being outlined in the paper contract that they sent me, but really, who reads small print when you've taken out things like this? (me from now on!). I know times may be hard for BT with all the competition but I was genuinely shocked that they have now sunk to the level of a back street loan shark. So if you receive a call from BT informing you of a new deal etc, etc..... you have been warned....

Snap to O/P about wanting to get the sales guy off the phone, I thought I was agreeing to have the information sent through the post, then I get a letter telling me I had agreed to this and that.

I had it all reversed and taken off BT cold calling, have left BT now.

How do you get taken off BT cold calling ? BT are forever ringing us on our ex-directory, TPS line ( Albeit BT's ). Everytime I ask them what gives them the right to do that they respond saying that they are "looking after their customers"

How have BT sunk to the level of a street loan shark? The fact of the matter is, you were to dumb and stupid to bother paying attention, opting to just say yes to what he was offering instead.

The sales person would have told you there was a minimum term and cancellation charges, so if you dont pay attention then its your own fault.

All the telecoms services have offers with contracts, just like the provider your be with now, Are they a Street Loan Shark?
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.

TPS is nothing to do with BT, they only register you onto it.

Yes, totally agree with the statement - but surely BT need to honour the TPS option ?

But - How do you get taken off BT cold calling ?

Ok - first of all, there is no need at all for insults is there !!

Forum Etiqutte - Pls be nice to all MoneySavers. There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps. ( Look to your right )

Secondly - I've had calls from BT sales people - and NO they do not always tell you the terms and conditions over the phone and people have only found out about them when they receive the contract. ( Although I've always said NO to ANY type of cold calling )

    I rest my case...

Do you live in Toytown? Of course all telecom services have offers with contracts, but I am far from convinced that all salesmen tell you about lock in. Mind you, if they don't and the company send you details, you can terminate immediately if the details do not agree with what you were told. And if they don't send you details, you are not bound by terms you were not told about. But if you do get it in small print, then you do have to read it.

It's not about "honouring the TPS option", TPS is about cold calling from companies that you dont have a relationship with. If you are a customer, even if you are registered with TPS, they are still able to call you unless you specifically ask not to be contacted in this way.

To the poster who said that the marketing people are always clear in what they say, the cold caller who phoned me had a Scottish accent. no offence meant to scots, :o I couldnt understand a word he said, all I could catch was "ill send", if he had looked at my account before he phoned he would have seen that i rarely make any phone calls.

As for the "shark" comment. :T Its an apparent game BT are playing to try and bind people into 12 month contracts to stem the flow of migrations out.

    Dear Mr

Thank you for your e-mail dated 29/07/08 regarding the recent package change on your account.

I am sorry it took so long to get back to you and to hear that your package was changed without your agreement.

I have tried to contact you this morning on the contact number supplied but have been unable to reach you.

I have arranged for your account to amended back to the Unlimited Weekend Plan and for the Renewable contract to be removed. I have also requested that when your next BT bill is sent that all charges for the Unlimited Evening and Weekend Plan be removed from your account.

I also understand from your email that you do not wish to receive any further telemarketing calls from BT, so I have also updated your account to reflect this and must make you aware that this change can take up to a month to come into effect.

I trust this resolves this matter for you but if you should have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused and Thank you for using BT.

    Thank you for contacting BT.

    Yours sincerely,

    Zahra Roberts
