Orange notice period?
My orange contract is due to expire on the 4th February.
I'm thinking of taking a new contract elsewhere with a new phone, and porting my number at the same time.
How much notice do I have to give orange? I thought it might be 30 days but not sure if it can be anytime after contract expiry.
I was thinking of telling them to put me on pay as you go and then I would phone for a pac code when I get my new contract from elsewhere.
Once I'm on pay as you go, do I still need to give notice of 30 days?

You would be best porting the number to a payg sim on the network your moving to (if you know what one) as customer services on payg usually cost the earth.Nice to Save. To save it's ____0

hi
having just had problems with orange, (2 stores telling me I don't need to give any notice) you do infact have to give a months notice. Make sure you do this else you'll be stuck with them for an extra month - like I am
Hope this helps0 -
If you get a PAC code, so long as you pay for the full 12 month contract (or whatever you signed - you have to pay up to the end of the contract) my understanding is that the PAC code will be processed in 7 working days - if you transfer to another network (even PAYG), this will then end your contract (without having to wait another month).

Request your PAC Code from Orange when you are near the end of your contract. As soon as you have got the PAC Code port it onto a PAYG SIM - any other network. As sson as your number moves (7 days from the request to the new network) your contract will end.
If you have a preferance of new network then tryand port onto that network because when you take out a new contract withthat network you will simply be migrating you number from that networks PAYG system to it's Pay Monthly system - which only takes 24hrs. Therefore, avoiding the need to wait 7 days again for your number to transfer!0 -
If your contract ends on 4th Feb, then you should give 30 days notice on or about 4th Jan to ensure that Orange ends the contract on the last day of the 12th month.
Simply requesting a PAC won't end your contract with Orange. You mut specifically end the contract and at the same time ask for the PAC.
I'm not sure that it would be possible to port your number from PAYG to monthly contract on the same network, unless you bought the handset from the network service provider.0 -
Steve_xx - you are right in saying that requesting the PAC will not end the contract with Orange, however, by requesting it, you are giving the 30 days notice (so long as you use it to transfer out).
According to Ofcom who set the rules (and process) on PAC that all networks are using, I understand that if you request a PAC code this is giving your network 30 days notice that you wish to quit. If you use the PAC code to transfer to another network within that 30 day period, then your number transfers to the new network and your account closes (assuming that your current and new network agree, which I understand that they cannot refuse unless you owe them money). If you don't use the PAC, your contract continues.
Reading on some of the mobile phone retail sites, your account needs to be active to request a PAC code ie you cannot cancel your contract and then at a later date request a PAC (not sure if this means that if you have given 30 days notice, then request a PAC, the PAC request effectively stops the cancellation to keep your account live until you transfer out, or refers to if you cancel the contract completely and then decide you would like the number).
If you used a PAC code before the minimum term of your contact (eg 12 months), then you could be expected to pay up the remaining period of the contract before they will process the PAC request.
The Ofcom customer guide on number portability is available at:

Hope this helps

Anon - Yes I agree with you. I wanted to point out to the original poster that requesting the PAC alone would not in itself cancel the contract. Ideally you would cancel and request the PAC at the same time.
You may be able to request the PAC after cancelling, but only within the intervening 30 days before actual cessation of the account. If the receiving network did not grab the number within the cancellation period, then I'm not sure whether the original contract might then continue.0 -
When you give notice to end your contract, then I think you're number ceases at the end of the contract too! Therefore would'nt it just be better to tell them to put you on Orange PAYG after then 30 days notice period and then request a pack code and move to a new contract.
also what happens if you give your notice period of 30 days, and it goes one day past you billing date, does that mean you have to pay a whole months line rental again, or only for that 1 day pro rata?0 -

Yes, that's one way of doing it.
If you give notice 1 day past your billing date, then you simply would be billed for the extra day. You can give notice at anytime after the intial contract period has ended, or maybe I should say more correctly, at the start of the 11th month, thus ensuring that it ends on the last day of the 12th month.
It should be possible to give notice at anytime during the contract to the effect that you wish the contract to end on the last day of the 12th month. You don;t have to wait until exactly the 30th day prior to it ending before giving notice.0 -
I think Orange are a disgrace. I contacted them to port my number after I'd given them 30 days notice to close the account. They wanted to charge me another month's rental as I had to give another 30 days notice to get a PAC. I wouldn't have been able to use the phone, though. What a ripoff!0
