Newcastle. Avoid Walker, Byker, Kenton, Cowgate (esp Cowgate!!), Elswick, Scotswood, Benwell. I work for a crime related service in Newcastle and most of the high risk offenders are from these areas. Personally I would live in Fenham, Heaton, Gosforth, Sandyford, possibly Jesmond. The Ouseburn Valley seems an up and coming area.

Gateshead. If you want to be on a metro line, then you've not got much choice. Whickham and Low Fell are both nice with good bus routes. Dunston is fab for being close to Newcastle and the Metrocentre, and is quiet in parts, depends where you get offered. But none of these are on Metro routes as Gateshead is hilly and gets greener the further you head out!

I don't know North Tyneside that well, obvious no no is the Meadow Well Estate

Thank you so much! Most helpful. Low Fell wouldn't be too bad - quick bus ride down to the Metro station. I had heard that Fenham might be one to avoid - interesting that you've contradicted that. I wouldn't mind the Ouseburn Valley area but I haven't seen any HA properties there.
