Areas of Tyneside to avoid?

For work reasons I'm hopefully going to be renting a housing association property in either Newcastle, Gateshead or North Tyneside. I'm a single lady and want to be somewhere reasonably low crime and secure if possible. Any advice?

Gateshead covers a wide area. I have lived in a nice part of Gateshead for over 4 years with no problems but, there are rough areas of Gateshead that I would not consider living in. Do you have specific areas of Gateshead? if so I could advise further.

If you ask the housing association for a list of areas this might help, but always be aware the waiting lists in more sought after areas are usually higher. If you get offered somewhere quickly, I'd be very cautious. Durham of course the better areas waiting lists are even longer. Of course social housing is usually placed in less wealthy areas with higher crime levels. With such a list of needs, I'd be tempted to rent privately.
One day I might be more organised...........

Most areas of Durham are nice!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

It depends though really, there's some pretty rough as a badgers parts of Dewentside and some parts that people would kill their own mothers to live there - ok maybe they wouldn't kill their own mothers but you get the picture ;)

    Thanks everyone!

Perhaps I should have made clearer the fact that I don't drive so I'm moving to be nearer work. Ideally I would like to be within walking distance of a Metro station.

I can't afford to rent privately unfortunately!

Newcastle. Avoid Walker, Byker, Kenton, Cowgate (esp Cowgate!!), Elswick, Scotswood, Benwell. I work for a crime related service in Newcastle and most of the high risk offenders are from these areas. Personally I would live in Fenham, Heaton, Gosforth, Sandyford, possibly Jesmond. The Ouseburn Valley seems an up and coming area.

Gateshead. If you want to be on a metro line, then you've not got much choice. Whickham and Low Fell are both nice with good bus routes. Dunston is fab for being close to Newcastle and the Metrocentre, and is quiet in parts, depends where you get offered. But none of these are on Metro routes as Gateshead is hilly and gets greener the further you head out!

I don't know North Tyneside that well, obvious no no is the Meadow Well Estate
